Kuenga-
Some of this might depend on who you are working and brailling for. Today I
am working on an assignment for two of my students. The question is:
Circle True or False about the following statements:
I change it to: Are the following statements true or false?
My students have assistance in their classrooms and some academic
challenges so the teacher is perfectly fine with my doing that. I usually
give a print version of what I have done to the teacher.

Thank you so much for the response.



I mean the braillist writing the correct Braille shape symbol rather than
copying the lengthy statement.



If the question states:



“Circle the correct answer”? A sighted child may put a circle around.
Whereas, when we ask the blind candidate to choose the correct answer and
write, it not only takes longer time but rather can be of more tiresome.



I am trying to find the international trend that can be embraced here too.

You can certainly indicate a circle using the shape indicator, but I’m
unsure how a braillist would braille this ‘in front of the statement’ – do
you mean braille onto the exam paper/question itself? Or do you mean the
braillist writing the correct statement and brailling the appropriate
‘circle’ symbol in front of their answer? In which case, isn’t writing the
statement enough of an indication of their chosen option?



In terms of ‘altering/tampering’ the questions – the skill being assessed
is knowing which option is correct, and the way they indicate that
knowledge is irrelevant. Labelling the options and asking them to choose
the correct one (i.e. A, B or C) gives the reader a much quicker and
simpler way of indicating that they know the right answer, without having
to laboriously braille out the entire sentence.



Interested to hear more thoughts on this!

I am afraid I was unable to make things clear.



Suppose in a test paper, if there are questions such as circle the correct
answer or tick the correct statement or cross out the false statement. I
have seen some Braille transcribers using choose the correct answer or
rewrite the correct answer or rewrite the false statement. In doing so, I
feel we are altering/tampering the questions.



I was just thinking, why can’t we use the shape symbol “ED” sign, Braille
dots 1, 2, 4, 6 and Braille Letter C for circling in front of the
statement.  Or, will this be a diversion?



Or, is there a standard rule for questions as such in Braille to be
transcribed?



I hope I have made clear.

Personally I would suggest labelling the options (perhaps A, B, C.... or
numbering them), providing them in list form, then changing the question
accordingly:



‘Choose the correct answer from the four options given labelled A to D’.

In UEB or in any other Braille Literacy, suppose if there are questions of
:

   1. Circle the correct answer.
   2. Tick the correct answer or
   3. Cross the mistakes.



How do we do in Braille?

Is it necessary to modify the questions? Or

Do we have Braille symbols for representing the shapes?
