The [l] code (shortcut ctrl-L) unconditionally goes onto a new line, but repeated occurences do not create blank lines.

The new line code [<] (shortcut is the Enter key) goes to a new line, and multiple occurences create blank lines. [<] does not serve as the beginning or end point of a style in the way that a [l] does.

As far as I can tell, there is little difference between [<] and [sk1] which is the skip-line command, whose shortcut key is ctrl-K.

Thank you, that will be helpful. Is there a way to do a hard line space?

You can put in hard spaces.

The braille translator normally automatically removes more than one space
between words.

A hard space "forces" space where you intentionally want additional spaces
to appear in Braille.

An example of this is where, for ease of reading, you do not want a
telephone number to be split over 2 lines.

To insert a Hard Space, place your cursor where you want to have a Hard
Space, and press Alt+F2

Hello:

I have a situation where I need to have several spaces between
words. How can I keep dbt from taking out the extra spaces?
