Hello Listers,

I moderate the duxuser list. I just wanted to drop a note with a few reminders. Please save this email, perhaps in a separate folder called "List Instructions," it has information you may need in the future.

Duxuser is a discussion list for people who use the Duxbury Systems braille translation software. It exists so that its members can ask and answer questions about how to best use our braille translators to meet their needs as well as receiving announcements from Duxbury Systems about updates and improvements to our products.

This list has hundreds of subscribers and you've probably noticed that the volume of messages is getting quite high. Despite the fact Duxuser has an exceptionally polite and considerate subscribership for such a large group, I've noticed the volume of off-topic messages is staring to creep up (and, indeed, several people have complained to me privately).

Thus, I am asking that each of you considers carefully, before posting or replying to a post (please note that ALL replies go to the whole list), whether your message or reply is of general interest to the other 300 plus people on duxuser. The following are some general examples of messages which would be of interest to our subscribers:

A question or answer about how to use DS braille software to accomplish a certain task.

A question, answer or comment about a feature of one of our products.

A question, answer or comment about how one of our products interacts with another well-known product such as a word processor or screen reader.

A product announcement or newsletter originating from Duxbury Systems or approved by Duxbury Systems for distribution on Duxuser. We try to keep these to a minimum and only post information which will be of general interest to our subscribers.

Off-topic:

Thank-you's. These should be emailed privately off the list.

Technical support questions. These should be emailed to Duxbury Systems at <support@xxxxxxxxxx>, please include your license number.

Personal notes and anecdotes about other subjects such as the weather or vacation dates. These should be emailed privately.

Discussions of the pros and cons of the various braille codes, embossers, screen readers, etc. when the conversation doesn't pertain to our products. There are other listservs for those discussions.

Commands, such as "unsubscribe." The unsubscribe command will not work if it is sent to the list. It will only work if it is sent to duxuser-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx . If you don't remember this, the same information appears at the end of every single duxuser post.

Questions or complaints about list mechanics such as "I can't unsubscribe." Please email me OFF THE LIST at <anne@xxxxxxxxxx> and I will be happy to help.

Spam. If you sell or know of a product, web site or conference which you think may be of interest to our subscribers, you must clear it with me (my email address is anne@xxxxxxxxxx) before posting it to duxuser. If you don't clear it with me first, it is spam and you may be banned.

That about wraps it up. Some general information about duxuser follows:

To unsubscribe send a message to:

duxuser-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx (NOT to duxuser@xxxxxxxxxxxxx , which won't work)

with unsubscribe as the subject. If that doesn't work, please email me OFF THE LIST at <anne@xxxxxxxxxx> for help.

To subscribe, follow the same procedure, but with subscribe as the subject.

DUXUSER DOES NOT HAVE A VACATION MODE. If you go on vacation and want to stop duxuser temporarily, please unsubscribe (following the above instructions) and wait for the automated confirmation message to be sure that it worked. When you return from vacation you will need to subscribe again. If you use an autoresponder, you should unsubscribe from this (and any other) listserv. Please confirm that you are unsubscribed BEFORE you turn on an autoresponder and make sure it is off BEFORE you subscribe again.

I appreciate that you read this and hope that following these guidelines will keep Duxuser the wonderful resource it has been, and still is, for everyone. Comments or questions about this message should be sent to me privately at <anne@xxxxxxxxxx>.

Thanks!

Anne Ronco
