Yes, you can shorten words for your guide words on braille 25. You want to do
it in a way that it is easy to understand what the word is. So for your
example, I wouldn't do "pu" but would either do "school district--Section 8" or
"school dist--Section 8, (other word)" if there's more than one Section 8
entry. If you have an entry that is many words, they don't all have to be in
the guide words, just what will fit.

I am a proofreader and presently I am doing a textbook.
In the index part of the book the runninghead is normally given on the first
line of each braille page.
On page 25 the first and last item on that page is given.
My question is:
Is it within rules to cut a word short to allow three spaces before the braille
page?
For example:
