You have had the answer for this.
To ensure the two different symbols when translating from a Word document into
DBT
Use the unicode symbol 2014 (m-dash) for a dash
and the unicode symbol 2015 (horizontal line) for a long dash.
They look very similar in print, but will translate as the respective symbols.
To enter a dash in Word I use Ctrl-Alt-minus on the numeric keypad
To enter a horizontal line in Word, I utilise the Math Autocorrect feature of
Word and have added my own definition of \long to quickly enter this symbol.
