I did call them and select the option "product support", but they don't take live calls but ask people to leave voice messages or send email to the support group, which I already did too. It occurred to me that at some point I had trouble lining the paper up over the tractor pins on both sides; it would fit into one pin but not the other. I kept turning the loose side of the paper back and forth trying to find the other pin, but it didn't find it, and when I tried to force it into the pin the paper would get crumpled. I tried setting top of form or embossing while the paper wasn't snugly mounted on both pins, and this may have caused the present damage--that when I load paper and start the Juliet, the machine does its startup self-test, then goes off line, advances the paper, and emits a continuous series of "ppaper-out" sensor beeps like there's no paper in the machine. Later on I noticed that the right tractor was movable, so I was able to move it to line up with the pin on the right side, accommodating the paper size. Even then the paper out problem persists. My other question about the first several lines being skipped is still awaiting an answer. It would start at the top after repeated trial-and-error attempts, but more often than not it will skip down four or five lines, even when the paper is loaded straight and feels like it's rolled to the top. How soon would it be possible to have a loner hooked up so I can continue my braille projects till my brother comes next week? He may have more information about his purchase of the Juliet, whether it's still under warranty, repair and shipping costs, etc. Thanks for your time and concerns. Hear from you soon.

Subject: problems with Juliet

Good evening. I want to report on some issues I started having with a Juliet embosser my brother bought several years ago and brought to my home last summer. For some time I experienced an issue with setting the top of form before each new embossing job. After I press Line Feed at the conclusion of a job, separate the finished pages, and press 2E to set top of form, the paper will advance forward, then back a little way but not all the way to the top of the newest page. I have to manually feed the paper back to the top, turn on the embosser, press OL to set it off line, then 2E to set top of form. Sometimes the paper will seem to go to the top, but when I start embossing the braille begins about four or five lines down from the top of the page, so that some text gets over the perforations between pages and is illegible, and the beginning of the next odd page appears several lines below the top.
(I have the top margin set at 0 in the Duxbury document menu, embosser
setup.)
Other times pressing top of form will make the paper go forward instead of back to the top, and I have to repeat the procedure till I'm sure it went to the top, then start an embossing job to determine if the top of form set correctly. When the paper is all the way in, it's hard to tell by feel whether it reached the top; I have to start a test page just to be sure, press V to read the first line, then cancel the job if it skipped a few lines, then start over after setting top of form successfully, which sometimes takes a lot of chance or trial and error repetition. This wastes a lot of paper, and I wonder what the reason might be for this issue. Does it have to do with how the paper is aligned, if it's straight or cockeyed, if one of the tractor feeds is insecure or loose, etc.? I tried following the manual's procedure for turning Perf Skip on and setting the number of lines per page to 27 (with the document set to 26 lines), but the issue didn't go away permanently. Just now I'm experiencing a "paper-out sensor" error when I press top of form or start embossing, even though paper is in the machine and is aligned straight and secure between the bars. When I turn on the Juliet, it does the warmup and starting tune, but then advances and makes a repetitive series of tones like when paper is removed or loosened from the sprocket handles. At some point I had trouble aligning the sprocket pins on both sides, but later I noticed I was able to move the right bar to adjust the paper size, but might this have broken something inside so the paper won't go in properly, or the Juliet doesn't find the edge of the paper when it does its startup test? I plan to call ET on Monday and ask what they think might be the problem, and if there's a simple solution, or if the Juliet might need cleaning or repair because of a failure in one of the mechanisms. My brother bought the Juliet some years ago, and I don't know if it's still under warranty. He hopes to be at my place in about ten days and may be able to pinpoint what's the matter--if the paper is correctly set in the embosser, if the controls work properly, etc. I couldn't find anything in the attached manual that specifically addressed the above issues, even though it does explain how to reset perf skip and top of form. If no immediate solution is available, would it be possible for someone at the Lighthouse to come with a loner for me to use till my brother comes, so I won't be out of business? (My brother is still inspecting the Versapoint Duo that went haywire last spring, and doesn't know how soon he'll be able to get that working properly again.) I look forward to everyone's feedback on these matters ASAP. Good night.
