Hi Ann:

This sounds like a ch sign, number sign and b.  Is it by chance in a
footnote or reference that refers to Chapter 2?  If so, the proper
notation I believe is to have the ch spelled out, followed by a period,
then the number 2.  Someone more up on transcribing things can correct
that if necessary.
