Amazon is to create 500 jobs in Ireland with the opening of a new
distribution centre in Dublin.
The fulfilment centre, which will open in spring next year, is Amazons
first in the Republic and will provide faster delivery on items for
customers, including one-day delivery on some items.
The 630,000 sq ft centre at Baldonnell Business Park, Dublin, will serve
customers across Ireland and the rest of Europe.
The company is also planning a second delivery station in Dublin that will
open this autumn, which will create more than 20 permanent jobs at Northwest
Logistics Park, Ballycoolin. The 83,500 sq ft building is expected to be
fully operational this autumn.
Amazon opened its first delivery station in Ireland last October in
Rathcoole, Dublin, with more than 20 permanent jobs. It also works with 10
independent delivery companies.
Among the jobs Amazon is filling are roles for engineers, HR and IT
professionals, health and safety, finance specialists and operations
managers. Recruitment is already under way, while Amazon teams to pick, pack
and ship customer orders will be recruited next year.
The new state-of-the-art fulfilment centre and delivery station are a
further sign of our commitment to the communities in which we operate. The
new teams will play a crucial role in providing faster delivery to customers
across Ireland including one-day delivery on hundreds of thousands of
items, said Stefano Perego, vice-president of Amazons fulfilment centre
operations in Europe.
The news was welcomed by Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and
Employment Leo Varadkar. This, alongside the announcement of a second
Dublin delivery station creating a further 20 new roles, will mean faster
delivery of goods for customers all across the country and strongly
underscores Amazons continued commitment to Ireland, he said.
Amazon last year announced plans to expand its Irish workforce to more than
5,000 by 2022, adding another 1,000 permanent jobs.
Martin Shanahan, chief executive of IDA Ireland, said the company had
contributed significantly to Irelands tech ecosystem.
Already a substantial and valued employer, the 500 additional jobs being
created in this new centre will bring its permanent workforce to over 5,000
next year in Ireland, he said.
It is great to see Ireland continuing to attract investment and playing
such an important part in the future plans of this global company. Amazons
ongoing commitment to Ireland is most welcome.
