could be on the table for Apple in 2021. The analyst speculates that a
$B!H(Bsignificant form factor design change$B!I(B could come to the Apple
Watch as
early as the second half of next year.
Kuo explains that the Apple Watch Series 6 is expected to resemble the Apple
Watch Series 4 and Apple Watch Series 5 form factor, with the $B!H(Bmajor
selling point$B!I(B of this year$B!G(Bs upgrade being the addition of blood
oxygen
sensing. Looking ahead to 2021, however, the analyst writes that he expects
that a $B!H(Bsignificant form factor design change would come with new Apple
Watch models in 2H21 at the earliest.$B!I(B
Kuo poured cold water on

expectations that the iPhone 12 lineup will feature 120Hz displays, citing
concerns over battery life. The debate over 120Hz will continue into 2021,
however, with Kuo predicting that the 2021 iPhone lineup will adopt 120Hz
technology.
According to Kuo, the iPhone 13 (or whatever it ends up being named) will
adopt LTPO technology to lower the display$B!G(Bs power consumption. In turn,
this will give Apple the battery headroom to enable 120Hz functionality next

Apple Watch Series 4, so it makes sense to extend the power-saving feature
to the iPhone lineup next year.
Finally, as we noted earlier this morning, Kuo also anticipates that Apple
will bring Touch ID functionality to the side button in additional iPad
models starting in 2021. The iPad Air 4 is expected to be the first Apple
product with Touch ID in the power button, and mass production will begin in
mid-September.

Apple$B!G(Bs September 15 event will focus on the new iPad Air and the Apple
Watch Series 6. He expects that the form factor of the new Apple Watch will
be similar to the current Apple Watch, and that mass production of the Apple
Watch and iPad Air will commence in mid-September.
The iPad Air is expected to feature Touch ID in the power button instead of
Face ID. Kuo believes that $B!H(Bmore new iPad models will adopt the side
Touch
ID starting in 2021.$B!I(B Details here are unclear, but it could mean that a
future iPad Pro adopts Touch ID in the power button as well as Face ID.
For the iPhone 12, Kuo expects an October announcement. The 6 .1-inch and 6.
7-inch iPhones$B!G(B notch area is the same as the existing iPhone
11$B!G(Bs, Kuo
says, while the 5.4-inch iPhone will have a $B!H(Bslightly narrower notch area
for displaying the information well in the upper left and upper right
corners.$B!I(B
Furthermore, Kuo does not expect 120Hz display refresh rate support on this
year$B!G(Bs iPhone models due to battery life concerns, but it is on the table
for the 2021 iPhones. Kuo outlines that the iPhone 12 battery capacity
$B!H(Bbecomes smaller$B!I(B this year than with the iPhone 11. When paired
with the
battery-intense 5G connectivity, 120Hz technology would have
$B!H(Bsignificantly
hurt the user experience.$B!I(B
All four new iPhone 12 models are expected to feature 5G connectivity, and
Kuo predicts that there will be two versions of all models: one version with
solely sub-6 GHz and another version with mmWave 5G and sub-6 GHz. The
analyst predicts that mass production of the sub-6 GHz version of the iPhone
12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max will begin in
October, mid-October, late October, and late October, respectively.
Kuo does not outline when mass production or shipments of the mmWave 5G
iPhone 12 models will begin, but he does note that it will be after the
sub-6Ghz variants ship.
