Excellent job as usual. I managed to convert a document in pages to open up as
a Word document on my laptop. I sent you the steps in an email.

On a roasting hot morning, basking in the sunshine of Cork, the conversation
wandered over topics of Lions rugby, Gaelic and other football tournaments as
the members arrived.
Martin opened the meeting with a request to compare the iPhone SE with the
iPhone 8. He Indicated that there was an iPhone 8 available for €200 and an
iPhone SE for €440. The group set about discussing the benefits of the two
models. The opinion came down firmly on the side of the iPhone SE as the only
option to consider. Jackie defined the SE as having the body of the iPhone 8
with the processor of the iPhone 11. The iPhone 8 being available at half the
price was no benefit since it would be redundant in the next year or so.
This prompted Derry to mention that there is an online service at
https://swappie.com/ie/ offering refurbished iPhones for a cheaper price than ;
new. The site guarantees top quality and 14 day trial or return.
It appears that NCBI have a project under which refurbished equipment is
available for €50 approximately. Further information is available from the
NCBI.
Pat urged everyone to check that any low-price company is registered with the
Companies registration Office (CRO) in Ireland to avoid losing protection by
dealing with a non-Irish company.
Ken drew the attention to recent difficulties experienced by some members to
receive emails from fb-exchange. He reported that he had successfully
registered one such person and found it surprisingly simple to do using his
laptop running Windows 7. Cearbhall added that he had completed the
registration of another member under Windows 10. He had to confirm an audio
captia to verify that he was not a robot. Apparently, this element is not
used in the Windows 7 version. In a subsequent discussion, it became apparent
that the process can appear complicated to some users confused by the need to
reply to emails or click on a link. Acknowledging the difficulty, Cearbhall
offered to complete the registration for anyone who find the process too much
on their own.
Des is looking for a word processor for the iPhone. Microsoft Word, Open
Office and Apple's Pages were mentioned. Ken and Cearbhall created a test
file in Apple Pages, sent this to the desktop running Windows 10 and tried to
open it in Microsoft Word without success. It also failed to open in readable
form in Notepad++. This proved that using the built-in Pages program would
not provide a useful answer to Des's query. It was suggested that he see if
he could assign his iPhone to be a registered device within his home Office
365 account so that he could legitimately use Microsoft Office on his iPhone.
It is clear that some members have successfully used Word on the iPhone.
People all over Ireland are now obtaining their digital certificate of
vaccination. It was made clear that the digital certificate might arrive by
post or email but needs to be scanned into the official Covid app. The app
scans the document looking for the QR code which is then saved into the app.
To do this, the email would need to be printed out so that it could be
scanned by the app. Alternatively, the electronic copy could be displayed on
a separate device so that the covid app could scan in the QR code.
There is a general warning not to laminate the printed certificate as this
makes it difficult if not impossible for the app to scan it. However, long
preservation of the printed document becomes a problem without lamination.
Jackie reported that the Bank Of Ireland app is now providing a six-digit One
Time Password (OTP) to authorise access to an account. Either a 5 minute or
ten-minute interval is provided during which the user has to find and enter
the OTP. Jackie and Paul both agreed that this gave sufficient time to copy
and paste into the app Window in both the desktop and smart phone versions of
the app.
Cearbhall asked for help getting Alexa to pronounce his name correctly.
Jackie and Ken came to his aid but, although an option to change the spelling
of the user's name was found, Alexa ignored the change. This needs further
exploration.
The meeting ended
