A fortnight ago, the Zoom app became strangely uncontrollable and the
Saturday and Monday meetings had to be abandoned. Declan became available
during the past week and found a solution that involved providing a simple
password to the meeting after opening it from the email link. This single
character password worked fine to provide access to today’s meeting. After
pressing on the link in Declan’s email, the user was asked for a password.
This code was set at the digit “1” and effectively completed the process. It
is hoped to have a better solution for next week.
We were joined by a new member, Helen, using an iPhone 7. She Would like to
hear about access tools that are in common use as an aid to visual impairment
although she does not need them yet as her residual vision is still
sufficient.
The group explained the use of Voiceover in particular, and other techniques
to aid vision such as zoom and colour changes.
Jackie is to acquire a new telly with 2 terabytes storage.
She is changing over to Skye Q. She has limited physical space for a 32inch
TV unit but hopes to squeeze it in! She defended her need for a screen to
share with family and sighted help.
Ger suggested the Skye Glass at a cost of €1000. Jackie had visions of
selling all her Alexas and knew she would not be able to survive the
experience. Ger recommended a 2 terabyte storage as being well worth the
small extra cost for recording.
Helen asked for an explanation of "Audio description". Stuart explained that
this describes a silent action or gesture that relates to the discussion but
will not be noticed by a non-visual observer.
The description is voiced when no actor is speaking. He pointed out that some
sighted viewers like to use audio description to help them to remember names.
Paul mentioned that the Abbey Theatre always use Audio Description on the
first Saturday of a new performance.
Cearbhall was helped to try to find his missing first page of the iPhone
desktop. The entire Home page disappeared for no apparent reason during the
week. Stuart suggested that the home page might have been hidden by some
accidental keystroke. No clues were evident in settings but there is, a ".."
somewhere on the screen that Voiceover cannot read and is thought to relate
to hiding and unhiding screens. Cearbhall promised to get sighted help and
report back.
Jackie had a great time with ChatGPT on the iPhone. It is available now from
the App Store. The meeting was highly entertained by stories created by
ChatGPT in which a tutor was portrayed in loving terms and in fierce,
aggressive terms in different stories.
Joanne was finding it difficult to open the Microsoft Seeing-AI "World
Preview". Ken and Stuart were able to bring her through it. She will try it
out and report. Cearbhall found it ineffective at building a route through
his own house but noted that it meaded more thorough testing before it could
be rated either way.
The meeting ended.
All the best,
Cearbhall
