On a miserable, wet Summer in July, with the sun lurking somewhere else but in
the sky, Jackie cheered us up with news about bringing James, her Eufy Robot
vacuum cleaner, home. She was very impressed when she found that all the dog
hair in the house was picked up. The Eufy app, which controls the cleaner, is
workable with voiceover but she found that it was also simple to connect to the
WiFi and also to Alexa. Jackie has not fully used the app, preferring to use
Alexa or google for the moment. Joanne also has the same brand of hoover and
she, too, is very pleased with it.
Joanne suggested that 4 year's warranty might cover the future replacement of
the battery.
Ger has the Ambrogio robot mower which has the better blades that last longer
than its competitors. It requires a guide wire embedded in the ground to
provide a boundary to hold the mower from wandering off. The mower nibbles at
the grass and emerges every 30minutes from its docking station to roam over the
lawn. The price is around â¬4,000 to â¬5,000.
Jackie told us about getting her new hearing aids. They are behind the ear with
a wire going into the ear. They can connect to Bluetooth to operate the phone
but Jackie does not like this as phone call quality isn't great especially
being on the move, as the hearing aids must depend on the phone's microphone to
make and receive calls.
Currently, the hearing aid is only connected to enable the battery level to
show up on the battery widget.
There is also an app called Signia but Jackie will avoid the app and leave all
at the default settings. there is a volume control on the hearing aid which is
all the controls that she needs access to for the moment. There has been a
positive change in her environment, especially hearing people talk. However,
everyday sounds like toilets flushing, rattling plastic bags and even Sasha
eating her carrot seems extra loud. In time, all this will be normal.
We heard that the problem of two adjacent crossing lights in Sligo rumbles on
and on. Despite many appeals to the Sligo authorities, they say that they have
outside advice that the sound must not be altered. The frustration is that the
requests that Jackie and other blind persons are making to have the sound
reduced, falls on deaf ears because of this interference. The campaign
continues with a meeting with the City engineer, and others.
Joanne wondered how difficult it might be to hear whether an electric car has
stopped or is still moving under such noisy traffic signals.
Cearbhall reported that he is exploring a new campaign to find a way in which
blind people can update Open street Maps in their own area with missing or
incorrect street and shop names. The research continues.
Ken had issues with the Alexa and a smart bulb in his bedroom which refused to
answer him. When he unplugged her, she'd listen for a little while but then
stop responding. Jackie sent instructions to reset Alexa, which Ken followed
but when the install was complete, his Phillips Hue bulb had disconnected from
the app. This meant that he could not control it with Alexa. Jackie came to the
rescue once more and, connected the bulb to the app by Bluetooth. But
connecting to Alexa still posed a problem. Ken rang Labs and the person there
got him sorted. Instead of the bulb working through a skill, Ken had to go and
add a device to Alexa. The bulb showed up here and it was a simple process to
connect.
Ken found that his email invitation to a person to join him in a zoom meeting
failed to appear in his Sent Items folder. After half a day, the messages did
finally appear. He has no idea why this happened. It was suggested that the
messages might have been trapped within the zoom server for some unknown
reason. Ken had found that when he copied the link from zoom and placed it in a
new message in the mail app, it did appear immediately in Sent Items, which
might confirm the suggestion of a problem with the Zoom server. Stuart and
Chris reported that they had experienced something similar during the week.
The meeting ended.
All the best,
Cearbhall
