The thrilling news of Ireland's tremendous win over the All Blacks
set us off in great good humour!
Our Chairperson had an issue with the Vodafone router and the problem
of isolating each of the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz WIFI streams provided. Some
15 devices were stopped until their connections with the modem were
restored. A Modern,
dual- band router. was purchased and opened a major can of worms for
our intrepid Chair. For those who are not familiar with this concept,
a dual-band router is one that broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
signal from the same unit, essentially providing you with two Wi-Fi
networks and the best of both worlds. If you would like to learn more
about this topic have a look at this information on the web:

-difference-between-2.4-ghz-and-5-ghz-wi-fi-and-which-should-you-use/

So often the service provider cannot understand a problem that a
visually impaired person is experiencing and so a visual call back is
a godsend. Both Vodafone and Dyson now have video call-back which
solved a few difficulties for our members.
In this case, Vodafone were no help and, in the end, Google brought
up a YouTube video that showed how to isolate 2.4 GHz. Basically, the
WIFI signal needed to be weakened. So, the modem was placed in a
drawer and all doors were closed while all smart plugs were moved
into the sitting room. Very slowly, all plugs were brought back on
line and all plugs were moved back into their rightful sockets for use in
lamps and the electric blanket.
Then during this process, hunger made demands to contact Uber Eats
for the first time. A KFC was ordered and the Uber Eats app proved to
be very accessible for ordering and for making a payment with Apple Pay.
The food came quickly and there were a number of update notifications
on the status of the order that you receive on the phone and the
name of the person delivering it. Then, once the food comes, you must
give the driver a pin number to prove the order is yours.
Face recognition came up for discussion. Some members found this to
be an unreliable method of accessing the smart phone. Particularly the
iPhone.
Various methods were tried including multiple angles of the head and face.
While there is largely success, there are times when facial
recognition simply will not let the user gain access. Finger print
recognition is also available but with mixed success. In this, the
finger, or a selection of six or more fingers are scanned to ensure a
more reliable response from the iPhone. This is only available for phones
with a home button.
The After Shokz bone conducting
Bluetooth headset was reported to give strange results on Zoom
meetings. The microphone is generally agreed to be poor for such
meetings but the audio is very impressive. So, listening to phone
calls or audio aps is very satisfactory. However, some members
reported that the audio volume would sometimes jump up to am
unbearably loud level for no apparent reason. Various ideas were
offered but nothing definite was available. Lately, the volume level
of the various audio channels has been causing problems for iPhone users but
without any apparent reason.
Screen Recognition on the iPhone was reported to be very effective in
apps that are difficult to navigate even with Voiceover. We learned
that Screen Recognition enhances the already-existing VoiceOver
feature. It detects the layout of elements in the user interface,
especially in apps that have not been optimized for VoiceOver.
Up until now, every element of an app's interface had to be manually
labelled to use VoiceOver. Now, Apple uses machine learning to
automatically identify and label every button, slider, and tab.
The meeting drew to a close with a discussion of the new voices that
are due to come on stream very soon. No doubt we will hear more
about them in the future.
The meeting ended.
All the best,
Cearbhall
