The meeting opened with a vigorous search for the reason why Jason
Donovan was missing from a recording of Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan
singing "Especially For You". Happily, Jackie found it under a
selection held by Amazon Alexa.
Turning to more mundane topics: Ken reported that he has invested in a
set of Aeropex Bluetooth headphones by Aftershokz. He is very
impressed with the clarity of the earphones but finds the sound "flat"
when compared with other output systems. Cearbhall pointed out that
Aeropex allows the user to assign one earpiece to Voiceover and the
other to such audio as radio, zoom, talking book, etc. This setting
is only available to Aftershockz users. It appears under Voiceover
/audio settings in IOS but only when the Aftershokz headset is
connected to the IOS device. The normal audio settings for IOS do not have
this feature.
Cearbhall demonstrated a severe drop in quality of both input and
output audio with the Aftershokz Aeropex headset during the Zoom
meeting compared with the in-line Apple wired earbuds. He questioned
whether this is caused by Bluetooth or is a design failing in the headset
itself.
A new feature that has not appeared until recently in IOS on the
iPhone, is the "Sheet Grabber" that appears from time to time. From
Online search of technical sites, indicates that this is a tool for
resizing the "Bottom Sheet" on the screen! In case all you experts
are now rolling your eyes wondering what this is about, a study of
programming sources will reveal all!
Jackie is breaking new records with her accelerated learning of
braille. In only a few months she can read four-letter words without
hesitating!
With hungry fingers, she is spying out for sources to train her in
Grade II Braille. She hopes to find an answer in the forthcoming NCBI
Zoom meeting on Braille.
Cearbhall reported an adventurous visit to Westport during the week to
address a conference on making Westport a model of accessibility. He
reported the difficulty in making a large, fully developed hotel with
many corridors and unlabelled room doors achieve this ambitious
objective. He complimented the hotel on providing a unique occasional
table or hall table at the end of every corridor. This clearly distinguished
the passage from other ones.
another very useful feature was that some doors were set directly on
the passage wall and others were inset into a small lobby. This
variety made it easier to remember a pattern when memorising a non-visual
route to the room.
However, each door was identified by a ceramic plaque that was smooth
to the touch and only carried a visual display of the room number. The
room key was a simple card that could be placed flat on the door
handle to open the door and was simple to use.
This led to a healthy discussion on non-visual tourism and people's
mis-interpretations of how guide dogs communicate to their owners and
to the availability of audio assisted crossings. The vagaries of
County Council CEO's who casually turn of audible crossings for no
apparent reason came in for a great deal of criticism .
As a low-tech alternative, Martin recommended simply slipping an
elastic ban on door handles to identify one's own hotel room in unfamiliar
surroundings.
Noreen was puzzled to know why people use earphones so much. Many
views were expressed in response but Noreen was adamant that moving
from room to room was better than risking damage to the ears from
concentrated audio generated by earphones.
Chris discovered that a full reset of his "Beats Flex" headset rescued
the device from being thrown out as unusable. A combination of the
volume and on off buttons performed this task.
Paul has entered the world of Virgin Media 360 and is enjoying
fantastic colour rendering compared to his old TV. He hoped that
others could advise on success with menus on this Android device but
the best available was a parallel experience on other systems.
We look to further colourful reporting on this in the future.
the meeting ended.
All the best,
Cearbhall
