It was pretty much the same as Martha discussed at today’s meeting. However I
was able to interact with the screen using voice over. The buttons would only
appear for a few seconds and Disappear again. They were not labelled. hris was
able to identify the meaning of the buttons when not using voice over. Jackie
and myself reported our findings to the developers of the app. We have a
further test to run during the week. Will report back our findings at next
weeks meeting.

Ken

Apologies: Pat Walsh
Martha downloaded the Signal messaging app. She tried to hold a
conference call on Signal without success. She was able to make a one
to one call but, as soon as she invited a third person to join in,
all control of the app was lost to the non-visual user. This was
disappointing since both she and Ken have found the messaging side to
be fully accessible and even better than WhatsApp for messaging.
Jackie shared this view. So, Jackie, Martha Ken and Chris agreed to
hold a test conferencing session later this afternoon and compare
what a sighted person can see and what Voiceover can access. We look forward
to a thrilling report next week.
Surprisingly, Signal Messaging is not with text but with recorded
audio. Ken and Jackie confirmed that this audio is better than
anything else they have used. Pat wondered whether a weak phone signal would
affect the quality.
However, it was noted that this depended on whether the message was
an audio file or an audio stream. If an audio file, then the
recording should be safely contained in the message and not affected
by streaming issues. If, on the other hand, it was held on the Signal
server and streamed to the recipient, then a weakening signal could
be critical for a better sound quality. This is another aspect that
needs a bit more research by our intrepid investigators.
Des found that his phone behaves oddly when he presses the power
button. The screen flashes but fails to turn off. A major discussion
took place about the power button and its various settings. Des found
that turning the phone off and on again resolved the immediate
problem but this seemed a bit drastic to the meeting as a permanent
solution. It was suggested that "Raise to wake"
might be active and Des set about checking this and other possibilities.
Battery Health became an absorbing topic. Some wondered if 99% was
always necessary or if 95% was good enough. Jackie found that her
phone had to b replaced when the battery level reached 88%. Ken found
out that there is a known fault in the battery level reader and Apple
have recommended that the phone be restarted to get the accurate
reading of the battery level every time. It appears that this is on
the long finger for an Apple fix in the future.
Des reported an alarming explosion of sound during the night when his
phone suddenly erupted with a blast of sound for no apparent reason!
He could not reduce the volume with the side-mounted volume controls
and had to turn off the phone. It was recommended that he take the
precaution of double tapping with three fingers before going to sleep
to prevent such excitement from recurring.
NCBI is making its Labs podcasts available on Alexa and Hey Google.
NCBI is to be congratulated for taking on a new project. They are
taking in redundant computer equipment, including laptops and PCs,
from industry, cleaning them and removing all the old software, and
making them available to members for 50 euros. Availability is going
to be random as supplies depend on the kind of equipment that is
released to the NCBI at any time. The procedure is to ask for the
desired type of computer, pay up, and then wait for it to become available.
Sean wondered if he could remove his old Eircom email address from his phone.
It appears that his contacts are linked to the old address and so the
meeting advised him to leave it in place in order to retain his contacts.
Chris found that his microphone was not available when he tried to
access Microsoft Teams during the week. On the advice of the NCBI, he
restarted the phone and then found that the Microphone was available.
Others had similar experiences with teams but Dominique found that
the microphone button was visible on the screen after she had also
been without sound as the app started. When she clicked the button,
her microphone did connect successfully.
The meeting ended
