Jackie escorted her Christmas friends: Santa Claus, Elf, Rudolf, Santa's
Little Helper, Christmas Fairy, Prancer, Dancer, Dasher, Vixen, Comet &
Blitzen, who promptly took over the meeting and behaved totally irresponsibly
in celebratory mood.
Ken issued thanks to all who worked hard to keep the meetings going by their
attendance and assistance with running the meetings and making notes.
Despite the fact that covid is getting worse various jokes went around the
group. The answer to the quiz question raised by Peter at the Christmas
party, "How many presents are named in the song "'The twelve Days of
Christmas '" was 364 - only Santa knew the answer!
On a serious note, Chris noted that many shops and hotels are not restricting
people. He is particularly uncomfortable in unrestricted queues where people
get too close and cannot be avoided.
Pat has managed to open up a contact in Revenue to assist people with a
vision impairment to fill in VAT reclaim forms. He is circulating the contact
information separately to the fb-exchange list. With this arrangement, it is
only necessary to send their PPS number, with their name, address and a VAT
receipt.
Ken showed his late birthday present of a smart light bulb and plug. Pushing
Blitzen aside, he linked the light into Alexa and now has only to say
"Goodnight" to Alexa and the main lights go off while the bedside light comes
on.
Still on Alexa and automated turnings on and off, Chris uses the Irish app
"ember" to control his heating and hot water systems. He has divided the
plumbing system into three zones: Hot Water, Living Areas and Sleeping Areas.
The smart system controls each zone independently and allows the user to
minimise the heating costs whilst keeping the house comfortable at the
different times. The ember system is managed by an app on the Smart phone and
is accessible with voiceover.
Martin was intrigued to hear about the ember system as it takes up to five
minutes for the hot water to reach his bathroom taps in the morning. The very
thought set Dancer, Prancer and dasher into a frenzy of neighing and jumping
about. There is great comfort in having the heat where you want it when you
want it.
Paul described how he converted his bathroom into a wet room with a walk-in
shower. Poor Rudolph is still wondering where the bath has gone! He mentioned
that a grant may be available on the grounds of disability access and safety.
Dominique is fascinated with the new voice Ziggy . She was looking for a way
to change Alexa wake word to Ziggy.
The official advice is to Just follow these steps:
1. Open the latest version of the Alexa mobile app.
2. Go to Devices.
3. Select All Devices and then select your device. If you use Reminders or
Routines, select Settings to find Device Settings.
4. Scroll under General and select Wake Word.
5. Select the "Ziggy" wake word from the list, and then select OK.
However, Elf found that Ziggy is not available in this region. So, these
steps just might not work! Best to try them out and see.
On a roll, Elf reported that the AIB app has been updated and is a bit tricky
with a new registration number to use instead of the account number.
Paul, in the guise of Prancer, told of a wonderful gift from the Punch Bowl
in Booterstown where his walking club totters in every time they go walking.
The staff were so impressed with the agility of Prancer and his fellow
creatures that they made a substantial monetary gift to the group.
Martin has been given a really useful device called "Id Mate". this is a
speaking device about the size of a large chocolate bar (Elf seen to be
licking her lips) and is a product of Envision.
Elf finds the app for identifying gluten-free products very successful at
naming products of all sorts in her fridge.
Dominique as Santa's Little Helper, announced that her boss is now available
as a personality in Alexa. Elf put a stop to her gallop by reporting that
Santa is not available in this region!
The rest of the meeting is vailed in Christmas cheer.
