Apologies: Ken and Derry.
The meeting opened with congratulations to our champion blind Tennis
player, Stuart who won 2 matches in the international British Visually
Impaired Tennis Nationals in Wales.
We look forward to further great results in The IBSA World Games, an
international multi-sport event for athletes with visual impairments,
TO BE HELD IN Birmingham NEXT YEAR.
Jackie has purchased and new Echo Dot after being jostled into it by
Dominique.
She found a voice which is supposed to have an Irish Accent but the
accent sounds more British than Irish. However, it is a very clear
voice and is happy to speak certain Irish idioms. There followed a
competition to see whether the echo Dot would pronounce unusual words
correctly. the female voice did brilliantly but the male voice failed
miserably until words were articulated carefully by the person
challenging him. He was then able to get the spelling right but spoke very
slowly in doing so.
Stuart has become the proud owner of an Apple MacBook. He finds the
Voiceover similar to that in IOS but the keyboard commands are still a bit
confusing.
As he only received the MacBook a few days ago, we look forward to
further reports on his progress. He finds the device very fast and
quiet compared to the laptop. Voiceover uses the combined control and
option keys, known as the VO keys in combination with various keys to
operate the program. Unlike the IOS devices, the MacBook uses a
physical built-in keyboard rather than a touch screen. There is an
accompanying touch pad that can be used as an alternative to the keyboard.
Jackie reported a very encouraging conversation with the Bank of
Ireland with regard to making the app more accessible. The assistant
reassured her that he would remain available to continue discussions
with her and assured her that the developers were taking her complaints
seriously. Well done, Jackie!
She noted that AIB is not greater either. Particularly when trying to
retrieve details of an account. The Iban number is found under a
purely graphic symbol that Voiceover cannot reach. Jackie was only
able to find the graphic by using Screen Recognition and sighted
guidance to activate the button.
The meeting agreed that Revolut is the best service for accessibility.
Even so, it is hard to find transactions in the app.
Chris tried to reach NCBI to query the award made to An Post in the
light of their very poor record in supporting a claim of some 14 years
duration with no hope of resolution. However, he has received no reply to
his emails.
Martin is delighted with the BlindShell phone. It has a slot in the
back for an extra memory card and two SIM card slots.
Jackie has modernised her kitchen with a new bleeping 4-drawer cabinet
freezer that bleeps when she leaves the door open too long. This is
really useful as it is easy to leave the door open when you cannot see it!
Apple TV+ is a free app available for devices running IOS 12 or higher.
Members agreed that the basic shows are not worth spending time on.
Every show incurs a fee that must be paid in order to view. The app
is annoyingly full of ads that make it more trouble than it is worth.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/apple-tv/id1174078549
YouTube is also full of ads. Stuart has an excellent solution to recommend.
He uses AdGuard to block ads. Simply open the show you want to watch
on YouTube and then go to Share and click on @View with AdGuard@ and
all ads are gone? It costs about 5eur per annum to subscribe to AdGuard.
More details can be read at:

Martin recommended a series of books on YouTube called "Rul Galaxy".
This shows a choice of different audio books streamed on YouTube.

Cearbhall reported a difficulty detecting whether the room lights at
home are on or off. He tried the light detection in Microsoft Seeing
AI without success. The app maintained a continuous shrill tone
whether the light was on or off.
Joanne suggested that the torch might have been turned on. She
suggested setting notifications to "torch light is on" in Voiceover settings.
Jackie had a problem with keyboard settings that prevented her from
typing letters with the sine fada on the PC. Cearbhall found that the
problem was caused by an incorrect language setting. The following
instructions should help to fix the problem:
Windows+i (pressed together not separately)to open settings;
Tab once to the list which starts with "system" and arrow eight times
to the right for "Time and Language" and press enter;
In "Time and language", tab once to the list of options starting with
"Date and time" and press down-arrow until you reach "region" and
press enter;
select (Ireland" if it is not already selected;
Go back out to "time and Language" and press down-arrow to "Language"
and press enter;
In "Language", press tab once to show your current language.
If this is not showing "English(Ireland)" then press enter on it and
arrow through the resulting list of languages until you find
English(Ireland).
That should now enable the acute characters with right alt-gr and the
lower case vowel or uppercase vowel with the alt-gr and shift key with each
vowel.
The meeting ended.
All the best,
Cearbhall
