Subject: [fb-exchange] Cork Meeting Saturday 28th. November 2020
In Attendance: (12 participants)
Cearbhall O'Meadhra, Jackie McBrearty, Paul Griffith, Dominique
Farrell, Ken Walsh Sean Kavanagh, Chris Egan, Martha Parkinson, Martin
Kelly, Pat McCarthy, Pat Walsh, Derry Walsh
Apologies: Gavin Allman
The meeting got off to an early start with an intense discussion on
home devices. With Black Friday under way people are buying the Amazon
Echo to reverberate throughout Christmas! Martin was stunned to hear
that Curry's were twice the price of purchases through Amazon.
Sean described the need to send the contents of an email to someone
who has no email address. He hoped to be able to send the email as an SMS
message.
Cearbhall And Flor Lynch were involved in seeking an answer. The
conclusion was that this is possible in other jurisdictions but is not
available within Ireland.
Sean wanted to remove some email addresses from the AutoComplete list
in Outlook on his laptop. Jackie, Ken and Pat McCarthy explained that
the AutoComplete list is nothing to do with the Address book where
full contact information is held. Cearbhall was sent to Google and
found the advice that Sean need only start typing the address of his
old acquaintance and press "Delete" on it as soon as it appears in the
edit window. If the individual is included in the actual Address Book,
then Control+shift+b will open the Address book where he can search
for the name of the individual and click "delete" when it is found. This will
remove all details of that contact.
Pat McCarthy and Martha have the Outlook app on their iPhone. They
agreed that it is very handy and easier to use than the desktop app.
In fact, Martha prefers to use the Outlook app instead of the generic
Mail app on her iPhone. Pat offered it as a useful backup to the desktop
version.
pat Walsh, negotiating with Vodafone on his package, was advised to
dial
1907 and go through Sales, not Repairs, as he will get a quicker
response that way. he also found that emails were coming in to his
iPhone but not into Outlook on his PC. He sought the assistance of
Vodafone who declared that all was in order. However, being a
resourceful person, Pat called upon the skills of a techy colleague at
work who found that the Vodafone DNS was actually faulty and
reinstated it. The service is now functioning perfectly after this change.
Chris reported that he is about to enjoy the fourth visit from the
technical support team to fix his terrestrial wireless connection to
the internet. He is not optimistic. Pat McCarthy suggested that he
seek a satellite connection to gain unbroken access to the service. He
noted that there would be a delay of one or two seconds as the signal
made its way from ground to satellite and back to ground. He also
thought it might be more expensive but perhaps it might be worth it as a
compromise.
Jackie gave a rundown of the benefits of the amazon fire 7 tablet. She
explained various controls which she found very accessible. Noreen
wondered what advantage the Fire tablet gives one. Martin wants it to
download the NCBI Easy Reader. Jackie finds it useful because she
Cannot buy books directly from the Amazon app but can do so from the
Amazon fire. Martin pointed out that one can download different apps
such as net flicks, Amazon books. Jackie said the advantage was in
keeping books separate from her phone. Pat McCarthy pointed out that it uses
gestures similar to iPhone.
Ken and Jackie explained that to enable Alexa to purchase items from
Amazon, "Voice Purchasing" must first be enabled in Alexa.
Noreen wondered if a new Amazon device would get confused with her
existing Echo. All explained that she could change the name but that
the new Echo would be set to be called Alexa by default and so there
should be no problem. If she wanted to change the name, the steps are:
go into settings, audio, double-tap on "Wake Word" and change it.
Jackie needs a padlock for her oil tank. Her former lock had to be cut
away because of corrosion. The futility of locking the oil tank led to
a run of stories led by Chris who pointed out that thieves just drill
a hole in the base of the tank and ignore the lock. This drains the
tank and leaves the householder with a major headache. Pat McCarthy
explained that the air vent gives another means of free access to the
tank which is big enough to insert a tube and siphon out the contents.
Paul fills his tank in the Summer months to avoid detection by
thieves. Chris concluded with advice to Jackie that she seek a marine
lock that will not corrode. Various Apps with Digital readouts were
discussed but nothing conclusive emerged. Noisy alarms were discussed
but are not available or could be triggered by passing birds and small
animals.
The topic of Christmas landed with a bang and a major struggle
developed between Alexa and all five of her owners in various
households as they searched for Christmas FM, which opened today. The
excitement rose to fever pitch as various owners demanded Christmas FM
(definitely NOT "Classic"!) in urgent and commanding tones to no
avail. In fact, poor Dominique was driven to distraction but persisted
again and again, at the urging of all the other owners, to try this
and try that and, finally, Martin Kelly rose to the challenge and produced
the magic words:
"Alexa, Christmas FM Live on TuneIn!"
Exhausted and worn out without even a wet pub to turn to, the meeting ended.
