Paul is having trouble scrolling through long listings, such as the TV Guide,
on his iPhone. He finds that he is blocked by the scroll button as he swipes
right to proceed to the next line in the listing. He hoped that someone could
give him a way of avoiding this nuisance but nobody else reported
experiencing the same problem. He thought he might raise the problem with
Apple Accessibility.
Pat and Paul reported that every time they update IOS, something that
was working goes wrong. The conversation moved on to the vexed
question of two-factor authentication. Mostly this occurs when
restarting the iPhone, or working with certain apps, Jackie shared her
experience of Envision AI. The difficulty lies, firstly, in the need
to have a second device that can receive the authentication code.
Next, it takes too long to locate each digit and type it into the
waiting edit box when using Voiceover. Invariably, the confirmation
process times out before all the digits are typed in and the user must
then start all over again. Pat managed to avoid activating two-factor
authentication in his iPad but it applies to his iPhone. Jackie noted
that it is a requirement of the Apple Watch and the iPhone but not of
the iPod. She wondered if it would be worthwhile raising a petition to
Apple to change the two-factor code to a four digit key. This would be
easier to remember and enable the vi
ally impaired user to input all the digits within the time limit available.===========================================================
Jackie explained Envision AI to Martin and agreed with Pat that it
successfully identifies the presence of an object but is not very accurate
with details. Ken noted that there is a new version of the app but it only
works on the iPhone 12 pro Max. As this means carrying a very bulky iPhone,
it was not considered to be an attractive proposition for a visually impaired
user carrying such an expensive iPhone extended out in front on the public
streets. Paul saw no point in the big screen when the user is visually
impaired.
Martin spent Christmas struggling with his newly acquired Amazon Fire tablet.
He downloaded an Audible book and succeeded in getting it to play but could
not find any way to stop it. finally, his only resort was to let it play all
night until it ran to the end. Hopefully he did not wake up for a sneaky read
during the night! Ken wondered if Martin's screen was locked and thus
preventing his gestures from reaching the player. Martin will investigate
further.
Noreen and Jackie discussed the handling of Audible books and the best way of
finding them in the Audible app. Jackie prefers to delete the book after she
has finished reading and this removes it from the app but leaves it available
in the iCloud. She finds it easier to retrieve titles from the iCloud rather
than the in-app library.
Paul, Ken, Jackie and Martha shared their experiences with recording TV
programs. Paul has to resort to sighted help as his recording feature is
not accessible. Ken uses the Sky Q TV box as it is accessible. Jackie uses
Skye plus, which records programs directly from a list of choices. Martha can
operate her virgin TX 360 TV by voice commands to her remote which then jumps
to whatever channel you request. She hoped that the same technique would
activate the record function.
Martha had a parcel returned by An Post even though she had firmly affixed a
label giving a clear address. There was no explanation that she could find.
Chris pointed out that An Post supplies a pink slip with sets out the precise
reason for the return of the parcel. Martha said that this was not available
to her as she cannot read the slip and has no sighted help. Jackie asked
Chris about the extra €10 handling charge. Chris explained that this is
exclusively for handling the customs Excise Duty. There is no handling charge
for any parcels that do not incur a Customs Duty.
The meeting ended.
All the best,
Cearbhall
