Pat Walsh was struggling to quiet the volume of JAWS. Various suggestions
were offered including using fn+f2 or f3, and a Wizard in JAWS that guides
the user. After some debate, it was agreed that there is no direct
information. Perhaps this is because the default speech engine "Eloquence"
is controlled by the system volume and is not controlled from within the
JAWS application. This is achieved by Pressing the Windows key and typing
"Volume", then, after pressing enter, using the right arrow to open the
volume control and then the up and down-arrow to increase or lower the
volume.
Martin wondered what the Continuity keyboard is in IOS. Jackie explained
that this is a special qwerty keyboard that appears in an IOS device to aid
in the typing of passwords. It cannot be use for messages but only for
iCloud passwords.
Paul reported that the Bank of Ireland is going to introduce more security
measures. This has serious implications for Voiceover users.
Pat Walsh announced that Revenue has set up a liaison officer to help with
form filling. The meeting agreed that this was a helpful move and showed a
recognition that people with a visual impairment have difficulties with this
aspect of bureaucracy and need assistance.
Time is ticking away for Noreen who is still waiting for her watch to come.
She promises great glee and celebration when this event occurs.
The parcel distribution service in cork, DPD, have suspended service from
the UK du to a lack of proper custom forms caused by Brexit. this has
significance for many visually impaired customers who are engaged in
services that are based in the UK and from whom they need to import
products. It appears that Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and Mother Care are
also removing their head offices from the UK in order to retain a presence
in the EU.
Derry wondered how people were finding the RTE player for TV viewing. Martha
said that she found it disappointing as it seems to be buffering a lot and
disrupting her viewing. Ken noted that it does not carry audio descriptions.
He also found problems with editing in the search function. Martha uses the
dictate function with the search bar and so does not encounter the editing
problem described. Alternatively, she uses the browse function to find a
programme.
Martha has trouble getting Alexa to stop speaking. She needs to repeat the
command several times. Paul remarked that he has only to quietly ask Alexa
to "stop speaking, please" and she obeys instantly. He is sure that his
politeness is the key.
Jackie likes to fill the house with music and sound and tells her ten Alexa
devices to set their output to "Play everywhere" so that she does not have
to endure the pain of different recordings playing in every room at the same
time.
Pat McCarthy introduced his preferred search engine, DuckDuckGo . He
explained that this is an internet search engine that emphasizes protecting
searchers' privacy and avoiding the filter bubble of personalized search
results. This distinguishes it from Google, Safari, etc. DuckDuckGo
distinguishes itself from other search engines by not profiling its users
and by showing all users the same search results for a given search term.
Cearbhall mentioned that he is plagued with requests to allow cookies on
every internet site that he opens during a search. He wondered whether it
was best to accept all cookies or none. Various members agreed that it was
OK to allow cookies that relate to the current app and to avoid allowing all
cookies.
Chris told of his 15-day wait for support to fix his internet connection
after it broke on Christmas Eve. He received the unhelpful advice from tech
support that he was causing the problem by using too much data. Chris was
sure that his previous problems were resolved just before Christmas by the
provision of a tall pole to allow the receiver to get a clear line of site
to the local transmitter. He was delighted to report that it has, finally,
been fixed. The technicians found that the receiver box at the top of the
pole was faulty and duly replaced it.
Gavin wondered what was meant by the Family Plan in Amazon Music. Jackie
explained that this permits the use of more than one device and also extends
cover over different house folds.
Cearbhall asked for guidance in finding a newly purchased title in Audible.
He recently purchased four books in a series but could not find them in his
library nor find a guide to their sequence within the set. Various
experienced members gave helpful advice which he agreed to try out. This led
to a healthy discussion about various methods of managing collections of
audio books including Good reads, audible and Wikipedia.
