Chris finds that his iPhone turns on from time to time when the device is
still in his pocket. He has a case with a fold-over lid that does not quite
block out the light from the screen. The group thought that his Display and
brightness settings might be responsible. However, nothing appeared to
contribute. He recalled that "Raise to Wake" worked when he had an Apple
cover on his phone. It was felt that non-Apple covers would not trigger Raise
to Wake.
Paul asked for guidance on how to restore his Messages icon to its original
position on the home screen. For some reason, the Message icon had moved to
another part of the screen. Many voices gave instructions until Jackie took
control and, with the help of Stuart, called out the appropriate steps. With
immense patience, Paul carefully followed the steps and finally got the hang
of the finger movements needed. For reference, here are the steps:
1. Find the screen where the app name is now located and note how many
screens are needed to get to the place where the app icon is the be placed;
2. Locate the app icon and swipe down with one finger to open the Edit menu;
3. Double tap on "Drag icon";
4. Voiceover confirms that the icon is now being dragged;
5. swipe sideways with three fingers to move to the desired page where the
app icon is to be dropped;
6. Find the existing icon that will be to the right of the moving app icon
when in place;
7, Swipe down with one finger to drop the icon in place.
It was noted that the App Library in the iPhone automatically selects a group
into which to place app names. This means that the app can often be found in
more than one folder in the library. However, this does not affect the
performance of the app in question.
Jackie reported that Skye HD+ will not be available anymore after the end of
May 2023. Skye are trying to encourage viewers to use Skye Go instead.
However, Skye Go is not fully accessible and is difficult to manage with
Voiceover. Jackie explained that she cannot access Planner in Skye Go.
Martin reported that American users are getting up a major petition to
entreat Microsoft to keep up support for the Soundscape app. We are all
wondering why Microsoft ever let such an effective app fall by the wayside in
the first place.
Cearbhall mentioned that he had tried out a combination of Lazarillo with
Google Maps to achieve almost the same guidance as that provided by
soundscape. However, it is not possible to set out a preferred route that
Google does not recommend and so the method is a bit limited.
Jackie is having WIFI nightmares with Vodafone. The help desk advises that
the line is bad on the one hand and then, simultaneously, says that her
Router is the fault. The group agreed that crackling on the line must be due
to a faulty external line and not a symptom of a faulty router. She is now
waiting for Vodafone to call out Eir to fix the line.
Cearbhall found that his Virgin Media Router had been placed in a bay window
in the front room. This meant that the router was radiating WIFI to the
neighbours and anyone on the street rather than internally to the house. He
noticed a 50% improvement in WIFI signal strength inside the house after
moving the router into the centre of the house.
Ger followed on from his query last week about the possibility of "Find my
phone" on his Android phone. He learned that he must put in his Gmail
account to register the service and he can now use anyone else's phone to
find out where his phone is.
A medical interlude covered many Covid experiences, including the elaborate
efforts of Guide Dog trainers to avoid catching Covid when supporting
clients.
Returning to technology, the Oko traffic light app came up yet again.
Cearbhall outlined his experience in bray where the audio bleep stops after
30 seconds even though the pedestrian "cross now" is still green for another
minute or so. The Oko app would be a help to confirm that the green man is
still showing in such cases.
Jackie explained how the Apple Pod is equivalent to Alexa and Google.
However, many podcasts that cannot play on the other two devices are
available exclusively on the Apple Pod. Dominique explained that the sound of
Alexa can be improved by resetting the equalizer. This is particularly useful
out of the box where the factory settings may not be the best.
