CORK EXCHANGE CLUB
Saturday July 1st. Cork City Library
In Attendance:
Ita Carroll, Derry Walsh, Ken Walsh, Cearbhall à Meadhra (Facetime from
Dublin, Paul Dromey
Apologies: Pat McCarthy, Pat Walsh.
Derry told the meeting that the next two meetings (July 16th and 23rd) will
take place at the City Library commencing at 12:00 noon â 1:30pm. There is
no meeting next Saturday, July 9th, as it clashes with the monthly Vision
Impaired group Walk Derry is still negotiating bookings into the future and
Cearbhall suggested that Derry act as group convenor from now on, notifying
members of meeting dates and times through the FB Exchange list. This was
agreed with a reminder to those who were not yet fully signed up to the list to
do so.
Derry also said that, for the next meeting, the Library will supply us with a
speaker phone and contact number for incoming calls.
As some members were still not fully signed up to the FB Exchange list, Paul
repeated the information, already posted in greater detail there, about the
Freedom Scientific meeting in Dublin on Friday July 22nd, also regarding the
expiry date of July 29th on the free upgrade to Windows 10 and the fact that
this will be extended for vision impaired users using speech synthesizers or
other necessary appliances.
Paul told the meeting that, on John Delaneyâs request, he has given the email
address of club members to his colleague Ann Cook, who has already sent us some
emails directly, including the information about the Trip to Tipp. Paul also
mentioned that he had begun to peruse the FB Exchange archive and found it very
interesting with some useful tips. From looking at the attendance records from
the Dublin Club, he and Cearbhall felt that the most effective number of
attendees at a meeting seemed to be around 7 â 8.
Ken recommended the app Tap Tap See which he found very useful for identifying
objects. Paul mentioned a similar type of app called Cam-Find, which he
prefers but Ken prefers Tap Tap See.
Derry explained that on retirement, he would be looking for a new home computer
and wondered whether he should opt for a laptop or iPad. He is accustomed to a
desktop and uses his iPhone 5/s for some functions.
Ken, Cearbhall and Paul all felt that he should go for a laptop, Cearbhall
pointing out that an iPhone is as useful as an iPad from a vision impaired
personâs point of view. They also felt that it was unnecessary to upgrade
from his 5/s at this time. As an aside, Derry, Paul and Cearbhall all prefered
their desktops to laptops.
Ita was interested in using Facebook and Ken took her through a presentation of
its functions. However, none of us were sure of exactly how to sign her up so
we will return to this.
Ken was having some difficulty using the triple finger quadruple tap for
selecting text for copying, pasting etc as discussed at last weekâs meeting.
He and Cearbhall got some way to progressing the matter.
Cearbhall told us about Google Keep, a very interesting notetaker for writing
or recording notes, that stores in the cloud and syncs across your devices,
home computer, phone, tablet etc. He also spoke about Drop vox, and audio
recorder that automatically relates to and is directly accessible from Dropbox.
This is particularly useful for music, he felt.
Cearbhall checked the spec of the Jabra BT 2046, as purchased by Paul and
Elaine. Unlike the Jabra EasyGo it cannot be used for playing music and
therefore will not help with tasks such as reading books. It is purely a phone
operating app, though Paul and Cearbhall have had limited success with trying
to get it to perform a few additional functions. Cearbhall subsequently phoned
to let us know that his own Jabra Classic v050 (â¬39.99 from Carphone
Warehouse) both plays audio files and will also control the iPhone.
Cearbhall told the meeting that the Exchange Club hoped to continue to expand,
Dundalk, Kilkeenny/Waterford and Kerry were mentioned as possibilities on the
horizon. The meeting expressed its appreciation to Cearbhall for his
continuing support of the Cork club.
Next meeting Saturday July 16th, Cork City Library 12:00 noon â 1:30pm
