Subject: [fb-exchange] Cork Notes July 23rd
Welcome aboard the Cork Tech Club Train with me Lady W at the controls. I
had 9 beautiful people travelling on the Tech tracks this morning.
Chris started us all off this morning with his iPad battery being as dead as
a Dodo. When Chris plugged it in it didn't come on straight away, at this
point Chris tried another charger without success. It turns out all was
required was patience. So the advice to Chris was plug it in, go and get a
cuppa and three chocolate biscuits and then return to the man cave and the
iPad should have enough juice to power it on.
Martin asked about how when he turns off his phone and when he powers it back
on it doesn't connect to Wi-Fi. We suggested to give it a few minutes after
powering it on to let it find the network. So Martin powered off his phone.
Results will be after the next piece of technicallogical advice.
Jackie was asking about adding an attachment to Gmail. When she created an
email by pressing the letter C she then shift tab back to documents but
sometimes this worked and sometimes it didn't. Ken suggested to go to the
file you want to email, without opening the file do the following:
1. press the applications key.
2 arrow down to send to sub menu right arrow hear.
3. arrow down to Mail recipient or press M, enter here.
4. press alt tab as your email client is open in the background.
5. the file name will also be your subject line so you can leave alone or
change it.
6. There will also be text in the edit field and highlight this and delete.
You can then type what you want.
Jackie said she will try this method. When she was trying to do this she
rang google help on be my eyes. the google person told her to turn on the
google speech, control, alt and the letter Z. This didn't work for Jackie
as she went into gmail via firefox rather than using google Chrome.
Now back to Martin, yes once he gave his phone a few minutes the Wi-Fi
reconnected.
Now certain parts of this next piece may not be completely recorded but our
NVDA tech Guru Cearbhall will fill in any gaps.
Ken during the week had an NVDA update but he wasn't overly sure if the
update actually happened. Jackie gently ordered Ken to get his laptop and
we'd work through it together. Jackie continued she also needs to complete
this update so knowing how to do it would be brilliant.
So our Guru Cearbhall explained the following steps:
1. press your NVDA key which is either the insert key or if set up the caps
lock key.
2. arrow up to help and right arrow, to check for updates.
There was an update pending so Ken went ahead and started the download. We
lost NVDA for a wee while so firstly Ken used seeing AI to read the screen
then he launched Narrator which is windows key control and enter and the
update was complete. We had one wee happy customer.
Martin was asking about the new NCBI radio station,none of us had heard
anything about it, its meant to be like RNIB connect so we wait and hear how
it goes. Jackie was urged to get her own show she could be the blindy female
version of Joe D.
Stuart was asking about the different voices in NVDA, it appears he only has
a small number. Seems Ken had his laptop open Guru Cearbhall said:
1. Press NVDA key and N arrow to preferences, find settings and speech.
There is a number of voices, Cearbhall will explain this a wee bit more.
Jackie was asking about the euro symbol on the computer. Cearbhall said the
right alt key and the number4. Martin agreed as he said he uses this as well.
The train broke down at this point and all passengers exited the train.
