Apologies received.
Declan is faced with the complexity of arranging new controls for the various
Zoom meetings run by the Insight counselling Centre. Today's meeting made use
of a temporary connection so Declan introduced and hosted the meeting. He
expects the new arrangements to be in place during the coming week.
This is the long St. Patrick's celebration weekend and Declan appeared on the
official Dublin reviewing stand in his glorious council robes. Green and blue
were mentioned but, sadly, no ermine!
Poor Pat has contracted Covid, and has to isolate for a few more days at
home. This is where Zoom completely triumphs in keeping everyone separate
whilst still attending the meeting.
Lady W explained that JAWS 22 has a facility to separate the JAWS speech from
the remainder of audio streaming through the headset. She was disappointed to
find that JAWS could be heard in both ear pieces but there was no other audio
coming through. This led to a vigorous debate which concluded that she might
be using mono earphones and could, therefore, only pick up the JAWS channel.
When tested with the laptop speakers, the separation did occur as expected.
It's back to the drawing board Lady W!
Paul is considering replacing his iPhone with a better and later model.
Various opinions were rained upon his ears as to the advantage of each
person's favourite service. Ranging from Virgin Media for €5 per month for
six months through Gomo and 3 network as reported recently in these pages.
Paul agreed that it would be best to buy the phone outright and then turn to
Bonkers.ie, or it's equivalent, to advise on the best service to select.
Siri came in for a lot of stick! "On it ..." and "One moment... being the
tiresome and oft-heard phrases without achieving any useful result. There are
no indications that Apple will make any improvements on this in the coming
months.
Lady W has lost her Sky connection. It died only recently but a repair man
is about to shoot out and retrieve the situation at the beginning of next
week. Sky has an interesting policy of not charging "Vulnerable customers".
Customers with a visual impairment are included in this category. It was
noted that the Sky Q remote is very small, rather delicate and breaks easily.
Joanne noticed that RTE has audio description on the program: "Reeling in the
years".
Lady W found difficulty with Sky Q when recording. She finds the service more
accessible from the "Sky Go" app on the iPhone.
We have reported here, many times, that Siri is making a mess of selecting
individual phone numbers from a list of numbers. Frequently, the name ordered
is missed and the adjoining entry is called before the caller realises that
Siri has made a mistake. This has been reported many times but there is no
indication that Apple will fix it any time soon.
Ken finds an effective way to work around the problem is to focus manually on
the link and then swipe down to "More" in which an accurate call button can
be found.
Stuart suggested assigning each favourite number to a shortcut by means of
the Shortcut App so that a person could be more easily accessed.
Martin wondered if anyone had tried "Google Assistant" on the iPhone instead
of Siri.
We found the following on the web:
To enable "Hey Siri, Hey Google," open the Shortcuts app and tap Add (plus
sign) > Add Action then search for and tap Assistant.
Then, tap Hey Google and add the Hey Google shortcut. You'll be able to say
"Hey Siri, Hey Google" to interact with Assistant.
This article explains how to add Google Assistant to your iPhone on top of
Siri, so you can access Google Assistant by saying, “Hey Siri, Hey Google.”
Instructions in this article work for iOS 12 and later.

Many members agreed that it is tricky to avoid accidentally calling Emergency
SOS when turning off the iPhone. There are a number of ways to make it
slightly less easy to make this mistake but still keep the call actively
available. A Google search will reveal a number of options for anyone who
would like to try them out. It might not be appropriate to recommend any one
solution here.
Sean was unable to reach his phone call list while only the contact list
would appear. With the help of group members, he was able to close down the
contact list and reveal the missing records.
Joanne was delighted to hear that she qualifies for the VAT relief on certain
purchases that assist her to function. Pat agreed to send the contact
information for the Revenue Commissioners to the FB-Exchange List.
The meeting ended.
All the best,
Cearbhall
