Pat opened with an observation that he was finding the presence of a
long list of email messages on the list proving a daunting task to
deal with every day. However, it was agreed that the delete key was
the best way to deal with unwanted messages. The list welcomes every
email that anyone wants to send to it and this openness is a priority for the
list.
Poor Dominique is contemplating a wonderful visit to Geneva,
Switzerland but without the company of her ever-loved guide dog. This
moved the conversation to travel and the demand for a photo id in
relation to passports and, also, to access to restaurants during the
Covid crisis. Pat pointed out that there is no official identity card
in Ireland, unlike other countries. So, the photo used in the Irish
passport is the only official record. It was noted that restaurants
providing indoor dining will accept the Covid Health Card as ID.
The quality of various artificial voices came up. The recent arrival
of a male voice to replace Alexa and similar changes for Siri drew a
number of opinions and comments.
Ken tried to get speech going on an Apple Watch without success. Then
he updated the app, reset the iPhone and the watch worked brilliantly!
The latest IOS release, version 14.7, specifically targets
improvements for the apple watch and perhaps this was the reason for the
success of Ken's effort.
Michael is struggling with his new washing machine but found it
difficult to download the remote app and see if that would work with his new
machine.
However, despite the good humoured welcoming of covid distancing, he
hopes to download the app sometime and have a go at using the machine himself.
Pat protested that he doesn't like the App Library on the iPhone. He
prefers to keep his large array of apps in organised folders on the
first few pages where he can more easily find them.
Jackie has bought the Aeropex After Shokz bone-conducting headset and
used it to explore the Soundscapes navigation app from Microsoft on
her iPhone. She compared it with blind square. Soundscapes echoed
features on the left and on the right very well and with very close
accuracy. However, it failed to name certain streets simply calling
them "Residential streets". Blind square was able to name each of the
same streets. When Jackie looked for "O'Hare's bakery", Soundscapes
offered her O'Hare airport in the United states! Des also tried to
find features in Sligo and, like Jackie, his first search drew places
in the United states. However, when he added the word "Sligo" to the
search, Soundscapes went straight to the location that he had been
looking for. Paul suggested trying the air code as a means of locating a
chosen place. This would mean searching on the internet for an unfamiliar air
code.
Jackie found the stereo feature very helpful. A sports ground on the
right came only into the earpiece on the right. "Steps on the left"
appeared in the Lefthand ear only. Des remembered a reference to a
headset that would follow the movement of the head and announce
features in relation to the orientation of the head rather than the
orientation of the iPhone. This would be worth further investigation.
Cearbhall got the response "Not available in your country or region".
Perhaps it has only been temporarily withdrawn.
Summing up, Jackie gave the thumbs up to blind square, supported
enthusiastically by Mary, and a cool response to Soundscapes.
Paul wondered if Audible involves two-factor authentication to
complete a purchase. Mary finds that it does not do so in her case.
Jackie noted that the authentication is sought by BOI on every
purchase with a One-time code (OTC). Mary is using AIB with facial
recognition to complete her purchases and so the authentication is not
evident.
In the case of the OTC, various copying methods were mentioned
including "copy code" from within the email or text sent by the bank.
The steps
include:
1. Go into the message;
2. tap on the number once with one finger;
3. Then go back to the Audible app and turn the rotor to "paste" to
insert the number.
Pat suggested using the three-finger, quadruple tap shortcut to copy
the code from the message.
Martha reported that Audible now offers a range of free books. Jackie
found that some of the titles from her Wishlist were available and free.
Stuart finds that he is never able to log in to book share using Easy Reader.
There was not much experience of this product at the meeting but Lena
Kouzi in NCBI is the acknowledged authority on this topic and might
have an answer for him.
Cearbhall mentioned that he had found the Change case feature of
Microsoft Office to be very easy to use and a great way to overcome
the problem of fixing whole sentences accidentally typed in upper case
when they should have been in lower case. Using the shift+F3 toggles
between initial capitals, All capitals and Lower case. Simply
highlighting the full text and pressing the shortcut once or twice creates
the desired result.
There seems to be a shortcut in apple but it is not easy to find and
he will report to the list later if it turns up.
Pat had been playing with the Power Share app from the ESB to report
outages and maintenance in the local area. He found that it is only
accessible when using the "list" mode rather than "map".
