As the meeting began, there was a great discussion of the success of
the Olympic athletes and the achievements of the Irish team.
Clare took part in the NCBI "Clear Our Paths" campaign on the hazards
of walking in city streets. There was clear evidence of the distress
caused by pavements fouled by dogs. Hopefully this will raise public
awareness to a level that will result in stopping the practice. There
was a bit of technology involved in that She was intrigued to find
that the recorder for the interview was inside the microphone she was using.
Pat McCarthy described the difficulty of raising public awareness of
issue sin the absence of an Access group in cork. He is able to raise
single incidents with individual engineers but cannot raise a general
campaign without such a group. It was generally agreed that it was
strange to find that there is no access group when so many major
disability service groups have premises in the city.
Martin was happy to point out that Kildare can boast of a vigorous
Access Group with many successes to their name. we are all envious, Martin!
Clare recently explored the use of a local pub for outdoor dining and
found great difficulty in making use of the services.
Back to technology: Ken and Jackie reported that they both found that
emails which they had sent in reply to NCBI's reply were being blocked
as infected by a virus, possibly a trojan. At least eight people are
experiencing this same issue with replies from NCBI. It is worth noting the
steps involved:
1. NCBI sends a clean message to recipient;
2. The recipient sends a successful reply to NCBI's email;
3. NCBI replies to the recipient's response and lands in the
recipient's junk folder;
4. The recipient moves the NCBI email from the Junk folder into the
Inbox and send a reply to NCBI;
5. The recipient receives a system rejection message saying the
message is blocked as infected.
Martin and Jackie will raise this with NCBI during the week pointing
out that the infection only appears when the emails are replied to.
There is no problem with fresh emails being sent directly from
recipients to or from NCBI.
Pat Walsh reported that when he tries to read a .PDF file requiring a
password using JAWS OCR, he needs only to type in any sort of text
string in the password box and the file opens up without any problem.
Microsoft and Windows Update came up for discussion. It was found that
pressing Windows key and typing "update" brings up:
"windows Check for updates, System settings, Press right to switch preview".
Pressing Enter will tell if a windows update is waiting or up to date.
Cearbhall reported a frustrating experience with audible when trying
to access a newly purchased book. Jackie advised that it is best to
select the Library tab in the Audible app and set the criteria to
"All" titles. The newest purchases and most recently accessed titles
will always appear at the top of the list. Other selection criteria
can lead to confusing results to the inexperienced Audible user. She
reported that she has not been able to access the Wishlist for the past few
years.
Paul is having trouble with Group SMS in IOS on the iPhone. He would
like to copy all the members from his present group so that he can
transfer them to an alternative app. WhatsApp was considered but does
not meet his needs. It appears to be difficult to capture the whole
membership list under IOS.
However there are instructions available for capturing lists of
members on the desktop in windows and in android. Cearbhall promised
to follow-up on this privately with Paul.
Jackie is looking for advice on switching between grade I and grade II
forms of Braille on her Orbit 20 +. Cearbhall promised to follow up on
this after the meeting.
