Dogs, particularly guide dogs, were on everyone's mind this morning. Derry
led with the announcement that his current guide dog was being withdrawn for
various failures to guide him safely. After landing him in the middle of the
road to be rescued by drivers and hooted at from cars to warn him that he
was no longer on the path, Derry had, finally, to admit that the time had
come. Almost everyone at the meeting had a doggy tale to tell that extolled
the virtues of their best experience or commiserated with Derry in his
demise. Big dogs, old dogs and little sharp toothed companion creatures kept
the conversation flowing. For the moment, Derry must return to the use of
the white cane while he awaits a new guide dog.
Martha was delighted to tell that she is being reassessed for a guide dog
next week. All wished her every success in her endeavours to get under way.
Doggy weights and weighing scales came next. Some vets take a relaxed
approach to dog weight and grade the dog by eye and accept a dog when it is
clearly not fat or lazy.
Dominique brought up the need and benefit of grooming and admitted that she
grooms her charge every day.
Moving swiftly along to technology, Martin was curious to know if Eric
Damery of Freedom Scientific had brought any exciting news to the Sight and
Sound presentation during the past week. Dominique had attended most of the
two-hour long session and found that there were no significant new
developments.
Chris asked if Microsoft Windows had a touch screen solution similar to
Apple's range of IOS devices. We heard that the Surface Pro range of
products provide full touch screen access to Windows 10 and the upcoming
windows 11 operating system. Screen reader access will be as in current
windows systems. Touch gestures are available in NVDA and JAWS which should
prove compatible with the Surface Pro devices.
We were delighted to welcome Anthony Burke, basking in Malta's heat wave.
Anthony was worried about his battery life and needed to find out how to
manage his usage and extend the battery life. Pat explained the mysteries of
charging and best use of Aeroplane mode. Everyone piled in to reveal the
workings of the battery Health function in settings in IOS. All agreed that
battery health is assumed to bottom at 82%, indeed Martin Kelly bewailed the
state of his iPhone 6 battery at 68%. Dominique,, at 96% and Pat at 100%
definitely lead the field. Dire warnings were given against those who charge
their iPhone all night and against charging the device while running heavy
loads.
Martha received her Echo Show 8 just before the start of the meeting. It
cost her €106 in the recent amazon Prime sale. She described it as a flat
screen resting at a 45 degree angle on its base so that objects could be
conveniently held in front of it for identification.
We were delighted to hear that Paul is almost out of the woods after
long-suffering weeks of successful therapy and accurately focussed
exercises.
Derry reminded all that the Cork Book Club is coming up shortly.
