Welcome to the Cork TechClub live from the deep freeze. Lady W being full
vampire much like her alter ego Jackie.is struggling in this sauna like
conditions.
Lady W apologises in advance for these notes as some hallucinations may slip
in.
Joining me in the deep freeze today are the following: Ken Walsh, Derry
Walsh, Michael Lorrigan, Des Keaney, Stuart Haxell, Chris Egan, Martha
Parkinson, Noreen Meagher, Jackie McBrearty, Dominique Farrell, Martin
Kelly, Cearbhall O'Meadhra, Sean Kavanagh, Paul Griffith and Marion
Maloney.
Jackie slightly whimpering told us all about scanning her covid cert into the
covid tracking app. Teeth chattering Jackie continued with she opened her
letter, scanned the first page to ensure it wasn't a bill or the bank
demanding a new charge for breathing. Well anyway Jackie opened the covid
tracking app, went to the new button about the covid cert and gave camera
permissions and then hovered the camera over the top left and with in a
matter of seconds it was done and dusted.
Jackie being Jackie she wanted to try and load this same covid cert into her
iPhone wallet. This was a tad more tricky and to double check Jackie got a
hand with the screen shot. Firstly, Jackie went to the website
https://covid19passbook.netlify.app/#intro Once in here she gave the site ;
permission to access her camera. It must be said firstly, Jackie did also
receive her proof of her vaccination via email so Jackie screenshot the page,
This was loaded onto the site with no issues however, her problems started
when load to wallet didn't work. So after getting a sighted person to take a
screenshot. Jackie went at it again and this time she decided to take it from
google and open with safari and this time all loaded into the wallet app.
Jackie while on the site in the Google app, double tapped on share and double
tapped on the option that said " open in Safari".
I think Jackie is off now to roll in ice-cream and burrow into the furtherest
part of the deep freeze. Now before Jackie dived in deeper she popped up to
say Android users that don't have the covid tracking app on their phones can
download an app called greenpass thats green pass all one word. Thats Jackie
gone.
Ken, Cearbhall, Dominique and others got their certs loaded onto their covid
tracking apps with no major issues.
Noreen told us about her friend who got an Alexa device. When It was set up
for her it was named echo rather than Alexa we all echoed like a good wee
choir this wasn't a major issue. Jackie having poped her head up again said
all hers have different names, being the fact Jackie has a ridiculous amount
of devices.
Alexa was talked about quite a bit this morning and afternoon. So I've
decided to make it all one piece. Dominique spoke about how Alexa was
sluggish of recent and her flash briefing is much slower. Many people asked
about the flash briefing so Dominique explained all about it.
Dominique spoke about the annoying thing with the Alexa app and once open
Voiceover goes into the background. Jackie popped up again and said just
press the home button and close the app and then reopen it again. Jackie
said not to close it from the app switcher but just close the app. Ken tried
this and it worked for him.
NCBI labs got a few mentions firstly, their new alexa and google skill we all
hold our breath to see how this develops.
Labs are also doing their webbing hour on Tuesday about the microsoft
soundscape app and its potential release at the end of this month. Soundscape
is a navigation app that requires the user to wear headphones in both ears.
Bone conducting headphones were advised but Ken told us he had heard the
apple airpods pro can also let the users hear whats about them.
Jaws and Sharky came up and people spoke of the benefits of upgrading Jaws.
In august there is a deal to upgrade or get a new license for a fraction of
the price.
Cearbhall told us about deleting 50 eircom email addresses from the VIP
students list. These 50 email addresses kept bouncing back so now all well
in the VIP camp again. Dominique asked why isn't this problem on the FB
exchange or the iPhone Newbies list. The theory was VIP Students is much
older and less people now use eircom.
Dominique asked about the difference between having a desktop and laptop.
This conversation started when Derry said about ringing the NCBI about buying
a desktop for €50. Derry is on some list now and he will get one at some
point. People like the laptops for its easability of moving it around. Martha
and Jackie said how they use external bluetooth keyboards. Cearbhall spoke
about the micro bump on's he uses.
Michael told us about how his sister bought them a new washing machine over
lockdown. This is a Hoover modle and its all touch screen. Its quite
difficult to use. Jackie suggested asking the company did they do an over
lay. Chris our resident googler said he couldn't see overlays for hoover
models but there was an overlay for another model. I've gone blank on which
one but it begins with the letter S.
There is an app for this machine and Ken found it on the app store. Michael
is concerned about his wifi as its not the best. Michael will report back on
his success or failure on getting this machine to work.
Thats the tech finished with now something that our highbrow members spoke
about the virtual tour around the Hugh Lane gallery. This was the first time
Cearbhall had attended such event and he was highly impressed.
Martin told us these virtual tours are quite regular. If anyone is interested
in these events I'm sure Martin or Cearbhall can answer any questions. Art
whent over this writers head as she wouldn't know a Van gogh from a
Rembrandt.
Marian asked about the sightless cinema. Martin said about how everything is
loaded onto SoundCloud. Our resident researcher Chris did a search for
sightless cinema and he found the plays. I believe their known as the
whitecane Theater.
The notes are ending now as steam is coming out of my ears and I'm joinning
Jackie in the deep freeze.
