Its that time of the week again. Come inside the Cork TechClub. In attendance
today we had the following people: Ken Walsh, Derry Walsh, Chris Egan, Martha
Parkinson, Noreen Meagher, Jackie McBrearty, Dominique Farrell, Martin Kelly,
Cearbhall O'Meadhra, Gavin Allman, Clare Cassidy and Sean Kavanagh.
We had sorries from Pat Walsh.
Cearbhall started with his disappearing on screen keyboard which vanished from
his new SE2020 iPhone. Cearbhall rang Ken but didn't ring Jackie who also
experienced this issue with her 11. So after sour grapes the notes continued
with, Cearbhall ringing apple accessibility and they made suggestions to do a
full reset and such like. I'll shorten this story Cearbhall got his issue
finally sorted by using the rotor and putting it to typing mode. When Jackie
had the issue she did a settings reset first and this sorted her issue for a
while. The next time it happened she connected her bluetooth keyboard and
called up the emogy keyboard. The setting reset did not solve Cearbhall's
issue, he did not know about calling up the emogie keyboard. The common
denominator seems to be bluetooth keyboards however, there is no scientific
proof but its personal opinion.
Jackie told us all about getting her Orbit Braille reader. This device will
soon be falling off the back of a truck really soon. Cearbhall told her the
most vital piece of information, he told her how to locate the on/off button.
This button is located on the back of the device on the left.
Dominique spoke about a webbing hour she attended about the NaviBelt. Dominique
has already posted a link to the podcast to the list. This expensive device
will keep the wearer straight especially when crossing roads. Its pricey. We
did discuss other apps like clew that would also offer directional information,
this information will only be available for the return journey or for a stored
route. We also talked about the we walk app and cane, as Clare was asking about
something that could be attached to the cane. Whatsapp got discussed twice so
this note taker has decided to lump both questions together.
Clare asked about deleting a whatsapp group and or all the messages in the
chat. Jackie and Sean both echoed to not open the messages but just swipe down
to more and follow the instructions. Ken said about just muting the group and
that way you'll get no notifications.
Derry brought up an issue with his Thursday night Whatsapp quiz group. Martha
and others attempted to get Derry in for an hour or so but it just wasn't
getting him in. Martha initiated the call and once everyone was in then she
tried to add Derry into it but still no luck. This group will have a practice
run before Thursday encase it was a connectivity issue.
Cearbhall was interested in the set up Martha uses when working from home.
Martha told us her system can crash because the setup with the memory and stuff
can't handle jaws. Martha uses her own internet connection without using a
VPN, microsoft exchange softphone and Jaws2020. The internal messaging is
sskype for business, its not overly friendly with jaws.
Derry had an issue with getting into a whatsapp group call.
Ken sang the praises of Martin Kelly after his info about using the same link
for a zoom meeting in the 40min mode with the free account. Ken had a
successful meeting with only needing to send out the one link.
Noreen asked Martin about his shell phone. Martin is still singing the praises
of this phone but he still uses his iPhone for the navigation apps. This phone
would be perfect for a person who just wants talk and text.
Clare is considering once restrictions ease to go diving in the Great Barrier
Reef. Clare wanted to know what technology would be available to go diving as a
blind person. It was suggested to also have a sighted person along as
technology could fail at the point the Great white is heading towards you with
mouth open.
The meeting ended without sharks although Jaws was mentioned a few times.
All have a good one and don't have nightmares about sharks and microwaving
cameras and washing phones.
