Subject: [fb-exchange] Cork TechNotes Saturday the 19th of August
Roll up, roll up and welcome aboard the 11am Tech Train from Cork to the rest
of the country. We had 8 happy eager little bunny rabbits on board.
Firstly, we all want to wish our Tennis Champion Stuart good luck for the
Tennis World Games. The best of Irish Luck to you Stuart. Stuart and the Irish
team are headding off on Monday as yet the order of play hasn't been released.
We started talking about the different banking apps like Revolut, Bank of
Ireland and AIB. Ger got his revolut sorted out he managed to verify his
identity. This was done without shaving his beard. We also advised Paul to sign
up to revolut as the few of us who have it believe its fantastic. The free
money with BOI was discussed and freezing and unfreezing cards were a handy
feature in all banks accept AIB, who claim due to security blind people need
sighted help to freeze their card.
Jackie was much like an excited chipmunk on sugar when she told us about
getting access to the Be My Eyes AI. Jackie was bouncing up and down when she
was explaining how it works.
When you go into the Be My Eyes app you go to the tab that says: Be My AI. In
here you can take a photo and Be My AI will describe the photo. It is possible
to ask further questions on the photo and what the Be My AI description. Then
its also possible to get it to describe a photo in your camera roll. This is
done by going to your photos and select your photo and go to share with be my
eyes. I've only typed my questions, but its snappyly quick with its responses.
I selected a photo that was shared by the Gardaí on facebook. The photo was
related to the storm. The post was giving a warning about a trampoline that
blew away during another storm.
This was the detailed description it gave: Be My AI: The picture shows a large
trampoline that has been blown up and caught on a telephone pole and its wires.
The trampoline is positioned vertically, with its circular frame and black
jumping surface entangled in the wires. The trampoline's legs and safety net
are also attached. The telephone pole is on the side of a street with a
sidewalk, and there is a white wall on the right side. There are also some
trees with red leaves and a green lawn visible in the background. The sky is
overcast.
There is a sign in this photo that wasn't described. So I then asked it was
there any signs in the photos and this is what it said: Be My AI: Yes, there
is a sign in the background on the left side of the picture. It is a
rectangular sign with a green background and white text. The text is not
clearly visible, but it appears to be a real estate sign as it has the letters
"REA" at the top.
This will make getting photos described out of this world amazing.
Stuart demonstrated the Envision glasses. As yet he is fairly happy with them
and they do show promise. Jackie has also tried these but she is still very
much team OrCam.
Ger changed internet providers but I refuse to name the new provider as I'd be
sued for slander. Ger is happy for now until sneaky charges creep in or
customer services can't be reached or thumb breakers land at your door.
Joanne got a new Echo 5th generation, currently she is finding it more
responsive and a much better sound quality than her previous model.
Traffic lights, road crossings, street names and open maps were discussed in
great detail.
Cearbhall was explaining HTML and Plain Text, at this point my eyes glazed over
and I started sucking my thumb and softly whimpering so I got this bla bla bla
HTML. Bla bla bla plain text. Ginger bread people are lovely and I want a nice
cup of tea.
The meeting ended with groans and wines.
