Subject: [fb-exchange] Cork exchange Club 27th. August 2022
As Summer comes to a warm close, eight enthusiastic members participated in
the cork Tech club.
The discussion opened with Audible and difficulties with sourcing books and
libraries in the Audible app on mobile devices. This used to be neat and
easy but lately, Audible has become rather more comlicated and it is not so
easy to find books even those in the user's own library. Sad to note that
Audible is showing less concern for its non-visual readers than used to be
the case before Amazon took over.
Ken noted that a book retrieved from another subscriber was held in "All
Titles" and could not be moved from there into the member's own library
space.
Cearbhall mentioned that he is plagued with the determination of Audible to
force him to use the UK site instead of the US site which he has always
used.
Members explained that he should clear away all cookies and point to the
American market place before logging into Audible. Dominique pointed out
that Martin had circulated an article on cookies and their management.
Jackie told of her difficulties with a recently acquired laptop in which
JAWS could not be loaded due to a shortage of RAM. On inspection, the HSE
had supplied a laptop with only 4G of RAM even though this is not sufficient
to load both JAWS and the Windows operating system. She found that the
memory could not be upgraded because the memory board is soldered to the
mother board. Jackie is investigating to see if the wrong laptop had been
supplied by mistake and is seekign a more efficient model that would meet
her needs.
Paul has difficulty getting Alexa to make a phone call for him. Dominique
suggested he ask Alexa to check for updates. The group was not aware that
this could be done. As a result, various Alexas were called upon to check
and all found that no update was waiting. Dominique was enjoying herself and
showed that the user can tell Alexa to enable start of request sound or end
of request sound.
Jackie has been exploring the use of NaviLens at home and out shopping.
NaviLens tags can be read aloud simply by pointing your phone in the general
direction of that tag.
She demonstrated NaviLens reading data on the label of a cereal box. There
was some discussion about the age of the system in which Pat explained that
he had been trying out the system for some years now. However, it is clear
that a renewed effort is being made to bring out NaviLens into more

Jackie was impressed by the fact that the orientation of the package does
not affect the reading of the data. It was noted that QR code reading does
need to be focussed more closely and is more difficult to use than NaviLens.
The Echo Show will also describe an object and read its labels.
Martin wondered if members had looked at the Aira service which is coming in
on the Blind Shell smart phone available from NCBI.
The BlindShell Classic 2 accessible cell phone, combines not only a tactile
keypad, but also voice control, and a high-volume speaker for flexibility
and ease in operation, eliminating the barriers to communication found in
smartphones with touchscreen navigation.
The Aira app connects people with vision loss to professionally trained
visual interpreters, called Agents, who read documents, assist with
navigation, access computers remotely, and provide any other visual
information needed to accomplish a task.
Martin noted that the cost of Aira is not cheap but is more secure than the
service provided by "Be my Eyes" which is free of charge.
Someone asked how to find the "+" sign on the iPhone. Ken demonstrated that
it is produced with a double tap on the "0", holding the second tap for a
few seconds longer than usual.
Our Apple expert, Dominique, reminded everyone that the apple iPhone 14
watch series 8 SE and Pro will be broadcast on the 7th of Sept. at 6:00 pm
(Irish
time)

channel, and through the TV app on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.
Ken reminded all that Tom will join the cork Club next week to talk about
the Orcam.
Martin was congratulated on his description of a recent visit to the Curragh
