In attendance: (9 participants)
Derry Walsh, ken Walsh, Paul Griffith, Jacki McBrearty, Martha Parkinson,
Noreen Meagher, Cearbhall O'Meadhra, Chris Egan, Martin Kelly.
Pat and Jackie led a discussion on using some of the features of IOS 14. It is
supposed to be compatible with all models from iPhone 6S up to the latest.
Only Paul and Jackie have installed IOS 14 and find it more secure than IOS 13.
They noted that some of the older iPhones, (7 and 8) may not be able to take
advantage of all the new features of IOS 14.
Paul is still having trouble with the BOI app and unlabelled buttons. Jackie
explained how he could rename these buttons with a 2-finger double-tap, holding
on the second tap, to open a context menu from which the icon can be renamed.
Ken warned of the need to clear the name field with the delete key as any
unreadable characters can prevent the name from being spoken by VoiceOver after
renaming.
Paul reported his success using a separate app called "Group SMS to send text
messages to some 25 members of his walking group. Having purchased the app for
a small price he found that it overcomes the limitation of 8 participants
available in a WhatsApp group.

On hearing of Paul's use of the iPod Touch, Martha drew the discussion into the
forbidden territory of books - a deviation over which we will gently draw a
veil...
Martha still has her iPod Nano after nine years and told of its value as a book
reader for long transcontinental flights.
Paul reflected that the iPod touch had been an invaluable introduction to
VoiceOver and the use of the touch screen.
There was great interest in sharing the different service providers and their
rates. Paul is thinking of getting away from an expensive Vodafone account and
looking at Ken's recommendation of Virgin at a much lower rate. Chris is very
fond of his GoMo service at the low rate of €13.99 monthly. Despite the
terrible reputation of Eir these days, Chris finds GoMo to be an excellent
service. Cearbhall is with 3 network for the past 15 years at a cost of €35
monthly. Pat is also with 3 and content with the quality of his service.
The collective view emerged that a lower rate can be negotiated with any
service on the threat of leaving to take up a better offer elsewhere. Perhaps
we should all have a go and see how we get on with our current providers!
Pat warned of incurring excessive demands for outstanding rental of equipment
after leaving. Jackie managed to defend herself from debt collectors with the
help of the Gardai (her favourites!). Paul dumped the equipment in his front
garden and forced his ex-provider to give up the demand. All agreed that there
is no need to hold on to equipment that the previous owner can use as a lever
for making outlandish demands.
The meeting ended
All the best,
Cearbhall
