Excellent Minutes Cearbhall
The waiting room was great fun, Ken and I had the power to welcome or reject
ye. We might have a wee charge next week.

Ken welcomed all with the help of Jackie as co-host. This was the first time
that Ken used the waiting room in zoom. Chris was whisked in so fast that he
did not notice the waiting room. By contrast some found that they had been
waiting ages before being let in to the meeting!
The meeting opened with a discussion of IOS14.
Here is a link where you can read all About this version of iOS:
https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT211808
Pat McC. said that he finds IOS 14.01 better than IOS 13.7.
That said, he, Jackie and Dominique noted that the audio volume can suddenly
drop to zero for no apparent reason.
A number of members reported that the radio comes on by itself after hanging
up a voice call even though no radio app had been opened.
Paul finds that he has to close a WhatsApp chat in order to make a WhatsApp
voice call.
Pat W., using IOS 13.7, asked if anyone found that Siri was sometimes
producing garbled text when composing a WhatsApp message. Some had also
experienced this but there appears to be no explanation for it.
Dominique was thrilled to find 20 or 30 options for the Apple Watch listed on
AppleVis. She reported having trouble updating her Apple watch. Ken explained
that the battery needs to be over 50% full before the update will take place.
Jackie went on a trial run with NCBI during the week to test Virtual
Orientation as a means of maintaining social distancing during long cane and
guide dog training. She was equipped with a harness in which her iPhone was
placed at chest height with the back camera facing forward. NCBI's Aoife
Buckley was located in Cork and connected by iPhone to Jackie's bone
conducting earphones. Aoife was following Google maps to advise Jackie on the
route to take whilst visually monitoring the physical features coming up on
the iPhone for Jackie to navigate. Another NCBI staff member, Neil, walked a
small distance behind Jackie as backup to warn her of any danger or
mis-alignment. Jackie was using a long cane to guide herself.
The system worked with severe limitations. Aoife's map and feature guidance
was effective. However, the fact that the camera was at chest height meant
that Aoife could not warn Jackie of closer obstacles at head height. The
camera could only cover a width of 45 degrees left and right in front of
Jackie. Hence, parked cars and poles could not be flagged early enough to
help her. Jackie had to turn her whole body to bring side features into view
and this so disorientated her that she twice veered off the pavement into the
line of oncoming traffic and had to be rescued by Neil shouting a warning
from behind. Jackie felt that a head-mounted camera would have been more
useful so that she would only need to turn her head to take in peripheral
objects whilst maintaining her forward orientation.
A fish-eye lens was tried but the image was too fuzzy to provide useful
information to Aoife.
In conclusion, Jackie felt that this technique was too stressful for a raw
beginner starting out with little or no long-cane experience. It would be
useful as a technique for refresher training as long as the camera was head
mounted with glasses or a headband.
All congratulated Jackie on her courage in willingly undertaking this
experiment.
Martin asked for advice on how to create a program shortcut on his desktop.
Here is one way to do it:
1. Select the Windows button to open the Start menu.
2. down-arrow to "All apps" and press enter to select.
3. Press the first letter of the name of the app and press enter 4.
Press the application key or alt+f10 on the app for which you want to create
a desktop shortcut.
5. Down arrow to More and expand by pressing the space bar.
6. Down-arrow to "Open file location" and press enter.
7. Press the application key or alt- f10 to Right-click on the app's name.
8. up-arrow four times to Create shortcut and press enter to select.
9. Select Yes.
10. If you want to rename the shortcut, go to the desktop and Press F2 and
complete the edit.
Pat W. asked how he might save useful pages found in Safari on his iPhone.
Ken advised him to tap on "share" and select his preferred location.
He was informed that the latest iPhone that still has a button is the
SE2020. This has the same features as 11 except for the camera. However, it
is half the price of the iPhone 11. Ken recommended checking with laptops
direct where he bought a laptop cheaper than elsewhere and was very pleased
with the result.
Some users find that they cannot access comments on images sent through
WhatsApp. Paul and Ken advised going into your own Facebook page and going
to notes for comments.
Marian found that her message was appearing at the bottom of the appended
message when forwarding or replying on the iPhone. Ken and Jackie explained
that she should double tap with one finger in the message body until she
hears "Insertion point at start" and only then start to type. Otherwise the
typing will be appended at the end of the message body following the original
message.
Chris and Paul finished off the meeting with advice on battery management
using low power mode, Airplane mode and battery saving to extend battery life.
The meeting ended
All the best,
Cearbhall
