Sorry, Pat! I did indeed think it was Mr. Walsh!
But thanks for your generous comments and to Chris and Ken. It's nice to feel
useful!
All the best,
Cearbhall

Notes Cork July 4th 2020
In attendance: (12 participants)
Derry Walsh; Martha Parkinson, Noreen Meagher; Chris Egan; Gavin
Allman; Jackie MacBrearty; Ken Walsh; Cearbhall O'Meadhra; Dominique
Farrell; Pat Walsh; Declan Meenagh; Pat McCarthy
Cearbhall reported that he had great difficulty connecting to MS
Teams recently with the Bose Bluetooth headset. He could be heard at
the meeting but he could not hear people at the meeting. He also
experienced several system crashes related to the connection. Martha
pointed out that she had also experienced severe problems connecting
with MS Teams. Ken pointed out that the book club connection with MS
teams is fraught with difficulty. On the other hand, Dominique said
that she had experienced an excellent connection with MS Teams. All agreed
that zoom is a much easier tool to use.
also agreed that connections to these discussions appears to be much
easier using the iPhone or iPad.
Martha raised a discussion on the problem of timing out while
attempting to make a call to various services such as Green Star,
Virgin, etc. She finds that she runs out of time trying to find the
right button to press for the option you want. It was recommended
that she use earphones so that both hands are free to swipe for the
appropriate buttons in time. Ken pointed out that an onscreen
keyboard always appears when you make a call using earphones.
Jackie wanted to know if anyone used an authenticator app. as part of
logging in to Amazon. If so, was the app accessible? This is a third
step in the authentication process that Amazon uses. Typically, the
Authenticator generates 2-Step Verification codes on your phone. This
provides stronger security for your Account by requiring a second
verification step when you sign in. In addition to your password, you
will also need a code generated by the Authenticator app. This was a new
issue for most attendees.
Dominique described a new ECG app that she recently installed on her iPad.
Ken and Jackie reported that there is a built-in ECG in the Apple
Watch that activates when the watch touches your head. There was a
full discussion of how to avoid triggering emergency calls by
accidentally activating the emergency reading of ECG and other health
monitors.
Pat Walsh reported that he finds that when Siri delays in dealing
with a request to send a message, the message does not get sent.
Jackie and Ken confirmed that this is a regular occurrence and said
they always cancel the request once Siri slows down like that to avoid the
difficulty.
Pat wanted advice on a suitable model of iPhone to buy, Ken advised
that he buy a phone to last four or five years. The IPhoneSE-2020 was
recommended and Jackie pointed out that this model has the same
processor as that used in the iPhone 11 and should give full
functionality for the next four years or so.
On network services, Chris said that he is getting excellent service
from GoMo at 13 euro per month .
During a discussion of insurance for iPhones, Martha said that she
has her phone insured as part of her handbag contents under her house
insurance.
This was a clever idea since, otherwise, insuring the phone with the
house means that all damages would need to take place within the
confines of the house and would not be covered outside the home.
Noreen was looking for the external connection for her phone service
and found it to be under an elaborately ornamented garden next door.
Happily the cable was close to a boundary wall so not too much desecration
was needed!
The meeting ended as Jackie took over the host role and passed it to
Cearbhall to give him practice closing the meeting.
All the best,
Cearbhall
