With thoughts of Summer and holidays away, the meeting opened with plans for
trips to Geneva, Rome and afternoon tea in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin.
Turning to matters electronic, Ken had a great success with the developers
of the TV Guide Ireland app. He found that the app would not work correctly
with Voiceover and decided to do something about it. Expecting to meet the
usual reaction telling him to wait and see if fixes could be introduced, the
developers, Entertainment.ie, surprised him by instantly implementing his
recommendations. He was asked to test the changes with Voiceover and report
back, which he did right away. The outcome of this happy exchange was a
fully accessible TV Guide app for IOS. Well done, Ken!
The key to Ken's success was the use of Screen Recording to demonstrate the
behaviour of Voiceover with the various activities of the app. This made it
easy for the developer to realise that the phone was not naming the channels
featured in the Guide.
Ken is confident that a new version of the app will be available in the next
48 hours.
It was noted that many app developers fail to keep up with Apple's changes
in IOS and so an app that was working well can suddenly become unusable.
Jackie is battling on with unique and highly creative solutions to the Sight
and Sound Hable challenge. We are sure she must be in line to win one of
these very useful keyboards. She had everyone in stitches with her crazy
efforts to prove that the Hable keyboard can do anything without going near
the iPhone or Android phone whilst flourishing a ripe banana as the symbol
of her identity. Jackie is especially adept at creating videos of her
success. In doing so, she has managed to create a suite of clever videos of
her remarkable achievements.
Yours truly was struggling to get Alexa to call out the right time. The
device was stuck one hour behind GMT ever since the clocks went forward.
Guided by a chorus of voices, I launched the Alexa app on my mobile and
instructions to select the Echo device and open the Settings tab. This was
not so obvious at first and the Greek chorus issued many instructions until
the right link was found and finally adjusted to "Irish standard Time".
Chris was horrified when he hungrily downloaded a new and exciting book from
BorrowBox only to find that as soon as he hit "Play" the app switched
immediately to "pause" and would not go any further. After much trial and
error and blessing Bolinda and all its audio books, Chris found his way into
the Chapter management function by activating the "More" button. In this
way, he managed to start the download of the book and listen to it from the
beginning after all.
It should be noted that, even though Chris has never experienced this
before, other users have found that Bolinda does not seem to rewind every
book after it has been returned. The key is to download all the chapters if
the WIFI is fast enough. Alternatively, swiping around the player screen or
accessing the More button, as Chris did, will always get any reluctant book
going.
Ken had three issues causing difficulty with his use of the Facebook app.
Firstly, he was being inundated with notifications relating to other people
which prevented him from reading the messages and comments sent from his own
contacts. He will look into the possibility of turning off notifications in
the app settings.
Next, he found that after making a video selection, he found that he was
given a video that was elsewhere in the list and not the one that Facebook
had confirmed for download.
Finally, Facebook Messenger is driving Ken insane. The Dictate function will
take his initial words but will not take any more after he has stopped
speaking as he pauses for thought before continuing to complete the message.
Jackie uses Messenger frequently to send multiple photos to her sighted
friends. She likes to give a piece of alt-text with each as a means of
completing the message. To manage this with Voiceover, she prefers to add
the alt text immediately as she uploads each photo. It seems that it can be
difficult to tell which photo is getting the alt text if this is done after
a whole set of photos have been loaded.
Paul is really pleased with his new iPhone sE 2022. He already notices that
the battery lasts 50% longer than his old phone.
Dominique is contemplating getting a new phone. She reported that her
sainted brother is exhausted trying to convince her that 64 gigabytes is
sufficient for her usage. Various experts around the meeting explained how
right her brother was. Dominique may now have relented and promises not to
buy the 256 gig version! We await the outcome of her forthcoming travels
with interest.
Chris was disappointed with the attitude of the agent in Harvey Norman when
he sought assistance with the After Shokz. He finds that the volume will
suddenly amplify to a painful level for no reason. Restarting the After
Shokz brings the audio back to normal levels. He has tried several other
headsets in his possession and he is satisfied that the problem is
exclusively due to the After Shokz headset alone. However, the assistant
refused to change the headset saying that it was an Apple problem, not a
headset problem. Jackie confirmed that she experienced similar audio volume
bursts with the After Shokz and brought her set back to Harvey Norman in
Sligo and received a much more helpful response. The agent replaced her
headset without question right away.
