Brief and to the point, Stuart, well done!
I still have one more item to research: sounds of entering different levels in
file menus....
All the best,

Subject: [fb-exchange] Cork tech notes
Cork technology club notes 30th July 2022 By
Stuart Haxell
Good morning, everyone on this August bank holiday weekend. I will be the one
providing your reading for this weekend. So as usual sit back and prepare for a
long read. It will be Tuesday before you know it.
13 participants
3of the eager participants were early today excited to get started with the
technology this weekend. One of them was not feeling the best we wish them the
best and hope they will recover soon. The pre meeting was taken up with the
usual random talk floating from topic to topic such as the weather and the bank
holiday weekend etc. some of the participants were celebrating, they had Monday
off. The zoom door was causing difficulty again as mentioned previously the
note taker feels that the zoom door should be replaced. Neighbours the Tv show
also came up as a topic the participants discussed the last episode coming out.
The level of acting was compared against other shows. Discussion of how it was
impacted because of covid was considered. This led into a discussion of covid
and its symptoms., Exhaustion is a common symptom afterwards amongst a number
of participants who have had it. Paul discussed his holiday for a while he was
up in Kerry recently. Participants all agreed that technol ogy is fantastic
and that we are better off now than we were 100 years ago. The participants
started early talking about food, they must have been hungry before the meeting
begun, the note taker is concerned how they will feel by the end of the meeting
this morning if they are hungry already.
A new member joined the tech club this morning the tech club gave her a warm
welcome, the tech club hopes she is not scared away. Paul asked how to create
the +sign on your phone when calling a number, The participants told him to
double tap and hold the 0 button to get + on the number pad. This topic created
significant discussion with participants trying to dig into this topic as it
was an interesting subject. Putting in 00 was also proposed as an option.
Jackie said she uses automatic dialling assist to bypass this issue. Dial
assist is in the phone settings on an iPhone. Sligo’s recent win was
discussed before the group returned to the +353 topic.
The weather came up once more as a topic of discussion. the weather is not
pleasant anywhere this morning. Martha asked what the symbol for degrees is on
a keyboard. Shift and 5 was suggested, it was wrong Cearbhall went and looked
up the answer for her. Sean suggested subscript as an answer. Jackie said alt 0
on number pad 1 7 6 with num lock on. the note taker hopes he got that down
correctly. to get theFahrenheit degree symbol on a keyboard is shift + F
according to Jackie’s google home. Cearbhall tested this and got it to work
successfully. NVDA cannot read degrees it calls it symbol.
(see Cearbhal’s e-mail NVDA does read degrees)
Dominique tested it with JAWs she found it tricky. Cearbhall described where
numbers were located on the number pad. When you are in num lock mode insert is
0. This topic went on for a while this morning. The note taker encourages
anyone who wants to try this out to see if they are successful.
Discussion of the difference between a laptop and a qwerty keyboard commenced
for a bit Cearbhall provided the group with a detailed description of where
different keys are located on a laptop. Apparently American and French
keyboards are different again. Sligo rovers came up once more some participants
listened to the match live through their Alexa’s. sport was a popular topic
this morning. Alexa was discussed and what it was like to play radio stations
through it.
Jackie asked how NVDA says what you copy and paste. Stuart also said that it
does not say enter when you enter down a page. Ken had some other questions
about NVDA reading files., jaws makes a door sound when you enter files NVDA
does not. Cearbhall was on the case. Cearbhall said that he did not think NVDA
had those kinds of sounds. Stuart mentioned that NVDA could add noises for
capital letters. Key echo was considered to be too extreme of a setting as it
read all keys not selected keys. Cearbhall said he would do some research on
this issue and will get back later. Cearbhall tried copying and pasting a piece
of text to determine if he had a similar issue as Jackie. It copied and pasted
fine and NVDA read out it no problem. It did not work in e-mail, however. Ken
tried this out also in word it did work, he then tried it in e-mail and was not
successful either. Cearbhall said he would research this issue also. Discussion
of the NVDA control and C. tabbing over to the OK button does work to make any
setting permanent but apply does not in NVDA.
Sean asked how to get RTE long wave radio on Alexa. It is not available on
Alexa according to some participants. It was suggested to try RTE extra. Sean
asked how to get outlook back after deleting it by accident. Cearbhall said
windows and type outlook to find it. Applications key to send to desktop to add
it as a desktop shortcut. Sean is getting a new laptop and was advised to get
Microsoft apparently it will cost 90 euro per year for it. Ken said he paid 260
for it permanently. Apparently if you own it, you may not receive the latest
updates, if you pay yearly, you will. Discussion of laptops and prices
continued for a while. He was advised to be careful with his purchase and that
he should check the memory before purchasing it. He was advised 16 gigs would
be a good amount of memory. This led on to a discussion of windows 11 and
whether participants had used it. No one had. An advantage of windows 11 will
be its touch screen over windows 10 according to Cearbhall. This topic wen t
on for a while. Xp was viewed favourably as an operating system.
A new member was having difficulty unmuting today to join the meeting the
participants offered her advice. The two-finger double tab as a suggestion was
proposed. She could not unmute any other way.
The jazz festival is next week according to some members. The story of the two
lads who travelled to New York on a plane will be on RTE next Tuesday for
anyone interested in watching. The topic of the recent trouble on the dart was
discussed briefly.
Dublin will have a tech club Monday next week.
Discussion of the upcoming coding workshop being run by Declan and Emily next
Thursday was engaged. A few people from the group are planning to join it from
the tech club. Jackie extoled the qualities of the cork tech club choir. Some
members of the tech club started singing at this point.
Martha asked about revolute. Someone sent her money; she could not find the
accept button in revolute. It came in automatically. This can happen either way
sometimes you get the option to reject it, or it will automatically go into an
account. Some participants gave us stories of how it worked for them. Revolute
was discussed for a while after this. Revolute has given some participants
difficulty in the past. Overall, it is fantastic according to participants
overall. The vault feature was highly praised. It does update on a frequent
basis. Jackie showed the group how to use this feature. You can rename your
vault to whatever you want.
Some participants started leaving around this point. Discussion of how far back
the notes go back on free list was speculated upon. The Dublin tech club
started in 2012 and the cork a few years after that. Some of the older members
discussed some of the members who had been part of the club the longest talked
about how they used to work when the clubs were in person. This lasted for a
while. Participants feel that the meetings are better online. Then in person as
more people are able to join. Discussion of audible books also commenced for a
while. Cearbhall finds the audible website difficult to access. The audible app
is one that causes immense difficulty for participants of the tech club. Some
narrators are better than others according to those who listen to them.
The meeting broke up at this point with all participants deciding to leave.
Hope ye enjoyed the read this evening.
Regards
The note taker.
