Cork technology notes 22nd October 2022
Good morning, everyone on this lovely October morning. I will be providing your
reading for the rest of the evening. So, make your cup of tea or other drink of
choice and settle in for the summary of today’s cork technology club meeting.

The pre meeting commenced with 3 eager people talking about different things.
Joanne asked about what the iPhone key chain was. Jackie explained it is a
password storer for your passwords where they will automatically put them in
for you using face ID. Ken asked where you can find key chain. To find it open
your I phone go to settings and go down to passwords it is there.
Dominique also discussed how her phone stopped working during the week. It
sounded like a very horrible situation. She got some help from apple
accessibility to try solving her issue. Someone’s voice over said hello here
by providing us the time. Chris told us about a similar issue he had recently
with his iPad a few weeks ago. Dominique solved her issue by charging it of her
laptop. Pat agreed with Dominique that plugging it into a laptop can sometimes
solve iPhone issues. She was so relieved she was able to get it solved. Pat
said that it is a software issue that sometimes emerges, she is the third
person he has heard about with this issue. This topic was discussed before the
meeting for a while. Dominique said she really missed her phone for the time it
was not working. She has her screen down at zero percent brightness because she
does not need it. Pat said that even though she has done this the apple logo is
still visible at zero percent battery level even with the brightness
so low. Chris asked if she had turned on her wall plug, she had.
We also discussed our fantastic birthday singing voice. The members of the tech
club are shaking in eager anticipation for the next opportunity to perform.
People talked about Siri and that it could not be relied on if you fall.
Dominique praised the apple watch as it will automatically ring emergency
services if you fall. The members did not think this was good as they may not
need emergency services but just a family member. Speculation on whether a
guide dog would do anything in this situation came up and was debated on. .
Discussion of how some people have fallen over in the past was a topic
discussed for a while here. Being sober or drunk was discussed. There was a lot
of people banging into poles, falling of curbs, falling out of cars. It was an
interesting conversation.
Jackie discussed the to good to go ap. She extoled its virtues and praised it
quite highly. This app was developed for businesses to help cut down on the
amount of food wastage they are faced with. You download the app for free from
the app store. The description from the store reads:

Martin said that a number of stores do something similar to this app Joanne
said that she had heard that some students have developed a similar app to
donate dinners instead of wasting them. This app was remarkably interesting to
the tech club.
Cearbhall has had a problem with dictation on his iPhone. He has found recently
that it has become horrible. He says that Siri is working even better then it
for dictating messages. Jackie agrees with him. The rest of the participants
agreed it has become bad. Dominique mentioned a setting that allows you to
increase the length of time Siri will listen to you before acting. Dominique
said that Siri can also read back your message before sending it. Jackie
provided quite an interesting example of where Siri got it wrong for her in the
past.
Ken had a technical laptop issue regarding headphones connecting to it. He
bought a new pair of them. He tried connecting them to his laptop but heard no
sound. They did work with his iPad. He tried an older pair of headphones; these
ones did work. He rang be my eyes to see if they could fix it. They updated a
driver and that fixed it until he reset the laptop. When he did reset the
laptop, the new headphones did not work. He was advised to instal a new driver
that was compatible with the headphones. He felt that this was too technical,
he asked the club for advice. The new headphones are apple headphones.
Cearbhall suggested that it could be oil on the new headphones. Chris asked if
all drivers were updated. Cearbhall suggested that something could be blocking
the port. He was advised maybe to use alcohol to clean it out or air. Ken then
said that when he plugged in his older pair they did not work until he
restarted his computer. This was a puzzler for the tech club, they did not k
now if it was software or hardware causing the issue. He also asked NCBI for
help. The smart hub was discussed for a while. Jackie praised it quite highly
for how quickly they call back. Jackie told cearbhall about the smart hub and
how to set it up. Cearbhall advised ken to bring his laptop into a shop to get
it fixed, he agreed that would be the best solution.
Martin asked if cearbhall had used windows control and prompt as a keyboard
shortcut. No one had ever heard of the button prompt. It was concluded that
prompt could possibly stand for enter or something else. Jackie asked google
what the prompt key was apparently the alt key was it. Stuart tried it out, it
did nothing.
audio messages were then discussed for a while. Jackie finds it hard to find
how to do it in I message. A few people did not know about this because they
use what’s app or messenger instead of texting. The participants found it
quite handy in I message once they discovered how to do it.
Dominique brought up that the new Alexa has been released. They were apparently
65 euro recently. Martin asked what the difference between the show and other
versions was. Jackie said the only difference was the screen size in comparison.
Ken asked if you could turn off the sensers of an Alexa, he was told yes. There
is apparently 3 new echo dot 5’s released from amazon. One clock, a kid one
and the original dot. Dominique tried to tempt Jackie into purchasing a home
pod mini, apple’s version of an alexia. Dominique said she was very tempted
to get it. Discussion of how useful Siri is came up here.
Martin said that the sightless cinema event happened during the week. They got
a standing ovation after it was finished. The tech club expressed their
congratulations to martin. Martin also said that seeing unseen was on yesterday
as well. Martin attended the event through zoom. The Hugh lane event was also
on last Tuesday.
Discussion of how blind people can miss each other if they are not in groups
like the tech club and other similar groups came up and was discussed for a
period.
e-scooters and how dangerous they are for guide dogs was discussed. The dog
expects them to move out of the way. This discussion moved over to all other
electric vehicles and how quiet they are. they are required by law in Europe to
have a level of decibel sound to be heard, this has not been currently
implemented in Ireland yet.
Ken asked about why NVDA has received so many recent updates. Cearbhall was not
sure why this is. Martin asked if they had changed much with these updates.
Cearbhall thought it could be security updates. The updates say march 2022 on
ken’s updates. To update it go to help. Insert n opens NVDA, scroll down to
check for updates. Joanne agreed that she was receiving them as well.
Paul asked how to take screen recognition of the rotor. Jackie said open
settings, accessibility settings, voice over, voice recognition, screen
recognition turns it off or on. Paul evaluated this by checking his rotor. He
was happy with the result. Jackie is a major fan of screen recognition for
inaccessible websites and advertisements. She was able to use it successfully
recently.
Ken asked how Jackie finds her new phone. She really enjoys the shut off and
turn on sound that comes with it. She also finds Siri to be a fair bit
snappier. Discussion of how good apple pay is came up during this part of the
club. To use it you double tap the side button on your phone and use face ID,
touch ID or password. Jackie mentioned that when she has to turn on her phone,
she is required to put in her apple ID for some reason every time. Dominique
said she had a similar issue before with her apple watch Their will also be an
apple update coming out on Monday. The participants hope that it will address
some of the currently existing bugs that voice over users are experiencing. The
focus bug in particular. Ken finds that recent calls do not delete easily for
him.
A discussion of guide dogs and dog food commenced for the next period of the
meeting.
Soundscape snuck its way into the end of the meeting. Cearbhall asked if anyone
had used it recently. Jackie said she preferred blind square still over it as
the open maps that soundscape uses are not accurate enough for her region.
Cearbhall finds that blind square gives him to much information. Jackie
suggested turning off the majority of the announcements and restricting it down
to a small area should hopefully alleviate many of these issues. Cearbhall said
he will give it a go again.
This was the last topic talked about today. The members of the tech club
decided to retire for some lunch. The notetaker hopes that you enjoyed his
