Cork technology notes, 28th October 2023
Good morning everyone, it is me the notetaker on this last cork technology club
before Halloween. So sit back and enjoy the read this week of the possible
spooky antics that took place during the most recent cork technology meetinG.
3 early birds joined the meeting, and of course, the first thing they started
talking about was the weather. They also briefly started talking about iOS 17.
They discussed the amount of required memory for the download. The most recent
ones have required quite a lot of memory to run. One of the participants
friends was unable to download it for some reason.

They also briefly discussed their plans for Halloween. The notetaker is
planning to stay inside to avoid the fireworks.
They also started talking about the awful weather that some participants have
experienced over the last few weeks. Some participants said it was particularly
bad Friday night.
According to pat, a yellow alert means that you cannot go out into the middle
of the ocean in a small vessel.
A participant briefly broke into song here. These were the lyrics. The worms go
in, the worms come out on your snout.
Cearbhall reckons that the iOS update that would not instal for one of the
participants was a faulty download. He advised them to delete the download and
redownload it again to see if it will fix it. Stuart mentioned that his iOS 17
update took a considerably long time to download for him. It was stuck at 70%
for several hours before it finally downloaded. Go to settings, general, device
name, storage, and update in the list activate it and delete update to delete a
faulty download. The second option according to cearbhall is to reset your
network settings. This is a last resort option as you would be losing all of
your settings such as passwords in the keychain.

Adrian asked what were the requirements were to get back the vat. The group
told him that it is for any accessibility hardware. The form you fill in is
called 61A on the revenue website. This topic was discussed for a small part of
the meeting. You are also advised to get a VAT receipt on hand to be certain
you can go through the process with as little hassle as possible.
Adrian said he got an update to his pixel watch. He said that they addressed an
issue regarding magnification. He said he gave them feedback regarding having a
slider to adjust the magnification, they fixed it rapidly. Furthermore, he was
pleased with their customer service in this regard. This led to a discussion of
the different watches available to participants and how they find them over
all. In particular, the Apple Watch was discussed. The benefits of having them
were also discussed. These were being able to pay with them, checking messages
and checking the time. Moreover, the emergency contact if you are without your
phone is quite beneficial if it is ever needed. Adrian told the group that if
you tap the crown 3 times on the pixel watch, it will ring an emergency
contact. He can also set a timer to ring an emergency contact if it is not
canceled by the time it runs out. It can be canceled if you turn off the timer.
Pat said that he tested the emergency number in the iPhone before. He says that
the location part of it has gotten significantly better than it was before in
the past. The number he tried was the 112 number. He feels the location finding
is significantly better than GPS.

Joanne told the group that votaphone are doing E-sims now. This would make the
process of switching to a new phone considerably easier for people. This was
discussed for a while. The benefits and disadvantages were discussed. Adrian
was concerned that you would not be able to try out a new phone in a shop
without an actual sim card. He was also concerned about how it would know what
network it would know you wanted to connect to.
The group then briefly discussed the find my app that is present on Apple
devices. This lets you locate other Apple devices connected to your iCloud
account. A few participants have found this to be unreliable.

The group also discussed how waterproof the watches can be. There is a feature
that allows you to turn on waterproof mode.
Pat asked how you pay with the pixel watch. Adrian said that you tap the crown
3 times to activate Google Pay. The Apple Watch requires you to hover over and
select the cards in the watch, according to ken. The participants have had
varying experiences with using Apple Pay or Google Pay. Some people have had
great results, but some others have had terrible results with it not working
for them with voice over closing down on them.
part 4
Ken demonstrated the chirping sound that is now available for iPhones from the
iPhone 14 and up. That tells you that your phone has turned on. It also gives
you haptic feedback as well if you cannot hear it turning on. This was
discussed for a while.
Paul said he was unable to fix the issue he was having with reading newspapers
online with voice over. Voice over stops reading the articles at a certain
point. He is missing parts of the articles because of this issue. Ken said he
felt that this is because of images or advertisements interfering with voice
over. He suggested maybe starting from the end of the article instead of the
top to read it. Paul said that this takes place in the journal app. No one else
who uses the journal app from the group were encountering these issues in the
app. Stuart proposed sharing it with voice dream reader as a possible solution.
Paul said he would try this.
Ger said he was having an issue with his android. His phone said that he should
reinstall google as there is malware present on the phone. Adrian discussed
this with him. He found it suspicious. He advised that her instal antivirus on
the phone to possibly fix it. Pat said he should delete all fake sms messages
and spam from his phone as a precaution. The group discussed how easy it can be
to be caught by fake advertisements and scams for a while during this period.
Ken said he got one the last week that asked him to change his Apple ID
passwords, he is fairly sure it was genuine. Adrian was surprised, as he could
not see any reason for this password to be needed to be updated. He later
clarified the notification was that he was asked to confirm and update his
password, not to change it outright.

Cearbhall said he encountered a bug with the notes app during the week. Hehe
has found it to have become very complicated in the last few updates. The group
has found it to be not great overall.
Joanne asked cearbhall where he acquired a talking tape measure. He told her he
got it from the RNIB in London years ago. Pat said he has one as well. The
group wondered if it could be purchased from amazon. The name of the talking
tape measure is tape king. A link is sent to the list. Cearbhall will send more
to the list later. Adrian also found it on amazon.
Adrian was curious if you could share files through iCloud. The group was not
sure. Options such as WI transfer and dropbox were discussed as alternatives.
Drop box, according to Adrian, is 9 euros. Ken said that when he used it
before, he found it very messy. Google Drive was discussed, pat said that this
used to be accessible before but is not sure if it is anymore. What’s app was
also brought up here. Pat wondered what the size limit was for it. Adrian said
it is 16 MB you can upload 2 gigs to it from the camera. Only 16MB if you are
doing it directly from the app.

To find the iPhones default measuring app, locate the measure app on your
iPhone. None of the participants were sure how to use the app.
This was the last topic discussed before the meeting broke up for some lunch
