Cork Technology Club Notes - 2nd September 2023
Good morning! It's me, the note-taker, back from playing tennis and
here to provide you with a summary of the most recent Cork Technology
Club meeting. Sit back and enjoy the read.
Participants: 9
Three early birds joined the meeting early and began discussing various
topics. The group was pleasantly surprised to find that they didn't
need a passcode to join this morning's meeting. In my absence, they
talked about different note-takers. Paul mentioned he really enjoys
the quick-fire quiz on Alexa, which gives you a minute to answer as
many questions as possible. The group also briefly discussed how Alexa
sometimes struggles to understand voice commands.
Anne-Marie asked if NaviLens could be useful for Electric Picnic
navigation for the blind. The general consensus was that it would not
be helpful. Most members of the group are not fans of festivals, based
on their past experiences.
Ger mentioned a form for claiming VAT back on accessible building work
but wasn't sure of the name. This led to a discussion on how to get VAT
back on accessible products like iPhones and iPads. According to Tom,
one needs to set up a revenue account to do so.
Jackie experienced a major issue with her Audible app; she had lost her
110 collections of books. After some distress, she found that her books
are still available on the Audible website but not in the app. The
group discussed potential solutions and the quality of Audible's
customer service. Jackie has confirmed it is an Audible bug with the
most recent update.
Tom told the group about Bookshare through Voice Dream and recommended
it, especially for students. He also initiated a discussion on
Soundscape, its effectiveness, and comparisons to BlindSquare. The
current versions of Soundscape are Voice Vista, Soundscape Community,
and Soundscape from Scotland.
Jackie happily announced that McDonald's and KFC are now available on
Just Eat in Sligo.
Anne-Marie sought advice on how to use Microsoft Teams with keyboard
shortcuts, and the group suggested she could seek help from NCBI.
Cearbhal reported an issue with his iPhone, involving unreadable
characters spoken by VoiceOver and a malfunctioning home button.
Various troubleshooting options were discussed. It was concluded that
he should try turning off his phone or toggling VoiceOver on and off.
Paul mentioned his difficulty in reading articles from The Journal
website. Ken suggested that images might be the issue, and other news
apps were recommended as alternatives.
Tom inquired about receiving calls while on Zoom and how one can rejoin
a meeting automatically. The group shared some tips and personal
experiences. To do it, you need to have full-screen phone calls turned
on. To find this setting select settings, phone, incoming calls and
select full screen.
Tom also asked about audio descriptions on TV and how to get audio
description on streaming services on his mobile device. Ger advised
creating a free account on the RTÃâ° app to enable this feature. Once
done, select "Home," then "User" to turn it on.
The group adjourned for lunch at this point. I hope you found these
notes enjoyable.
All the best,
Regards,
The Note-Taker
