Cork technology club notes 3th December 2022
8 participants
Good morning everyone it is me once more the note taker. I haven’t been here
for a while so as a reminder get your favourite drink of choice and settle in
for a long read this evening.
The note taker came into the meeting to a discussion of rugby for some reason.
There was discussion of fundraising with two of our members planning on doing
some in the near future, one in particular is going to have there guide dog go
fundraising in a prison, hopefully we see her again for future meetings.
2 participants sent there apologies for missing the meeting today, we forgave
them this time.
A bit of pre meeting banter commenced for quite a while before the meeting
began properly at 11. Ken told us he bought a echo fifth generation for a
friend for 39 euro on a black Friday sale. Discussion of black Friday and the
deals that were on offer were talked about for a period. Paul told us about the
audio book he recently got for 17 euro down from 35 which was bono’s auto
biography, Bono read it himself as the narrator. Other people discussed the
products they got over the black Friday sales. In particular ken got a pair of
new headphones that are 7 foot long, he’s quite pleased with them. Discussion
of headphones became a topic for a while with different people talking about
their favourites and the experiences they have had with them in the past.
Jackie told the group she bought 3 new fifth generation echo devices so she can
check the temperature in different rooms in her house. Apparently you can get a
text message in the app with the temperature.
Ken sent Jackie a voice message through Alexa and it worked, Jackie got the
text version of ken’s message in her Alexa app on her phone. To do this go into
communicate in your Alexa app. This is located at the bottom of the screen on
an iPhone. . this took a while to find for the group. The group determined that
this setting was quite dodgy. The group investigated this for a while during
the meeting… you have to enable sound in notifications to get Alexa to beep to
let you know if you have new notifications. Some other features include the
ability to call people through Alexa and drop into anyone’s Alexa if they have
that feature enabled. A number of people found this feature unsettling as they
would not be able to see someone has dropped in without their knowledge..
Dominique asked what the announcement feature was on Alexa Jackie explained it
to her.
Paul asked a question. He went through his messages this morning and his phone
said he had an unread message even though he had read all of them. He found it
by asking Siri it was not present in his message’s. The group thought it might
have been a whats app message he could have missed. Dominique told us about a
voice over notification bug in iOS 16 wherein voice over will not read them.
Chris asked if you could schedule Alexa to play the radio at set times in the
evening. Jackie said you can. Jackie said she sets a timer for audio books at
night.
Jackie told us about a new feature from bank of Ireland. If you get a message
from bank of Ireland and your not sure if its genuine you can copy and paste it
and send “check” alongside it to the following number:
50365
Ken told us about a Revolut issue he was having, he tried tapping it in a shop
yesterday and it did not work. He thought it might have been frozen or he
reached his contact limit. This was not the issue unfortunately. He and Jackie
investigated the issue to no result. He is still not sure what the problem is.
Martha mentioned that she finds her notifications in Revolut are very slow, a
number of members agreed whilst others found the complete opposite. With
notifications coming in immediately Stuart suggested using his phone as a
solution to pay through Revolut. People didn’t like that idea. Revolut was
discussed for a long period. People agreed that having actual cash in your
pocket is a good idea just in case of an emergency .Some people use the Revolut
card when they take a taxi.
Jackie is getting her first home delivery from duns store. It only started two
weeks ago in sligo. It is 7 euro delivery and every €50 they take a €10off. She
saved €45. If you download the app you get €10 euro off again. Jackie said she
gets free delivery from Tesco. A number of members do the same but others
prefer buying in person.
The tech club will not be running on the week of the 24th and will restart on
the 7th January next year.
The group discussed the weather for a while l its going to get a lot colder in
the next week. Touching wheelie bins came up here as a method of detecting if
their is ice if its frozen the ground is probably slippy. The group discussed
the many times they have fallen over and how their guide dogs have reacted in
those situations.
The group talked about how there dogs wake them up in the morning. One hits
them in the face with a slipper and others cry in their owners faces for
food’s. Guide dogs were discussed for a while. The discussion covered a wide
number of topics.
The group discussed health insurance for a period and how long they have been
with there providers. They then started talking about the first phone they ever
worked with. Some people have never changed there number over the years. A lot
of first phones had antenna’s.. A lot of models of phones were were thrown out
here N70 is the only one the note taker only remembers this one.
Jackie said she got jaws 2023 and windows 11. She has not played around with it
yet. Joanne said she may have accidentally upgraded to windows 11 by accident
recently. Discussion of computers and comparing them to iPads and iPhones
commenced for a while and how they may be better then computers in some
respects. Jackie was having wi fi issues this week she was dropping in and out
today.
Chris asked Jackie about the sky app. He can not scroll through his programs he
can only scroll through 3 programs before it jumps, Jackie does not have this
issue with her app. Martha asked if anyone had gone through the RTE player
recently, she reckons it has gotten less accessible recently. Dominique said
she tried it on her computer and did not like how it worked.
The corke tech club ended today at this point. The note taker hopes that you
enjoyed the read this week.
Regards
The note taker.
