Hi Adrian, at the moment the long term illness card Will not pay for the Libre
two, but next Tuesday I will bring this up with my diabetic team. This was the
reason I brought this CGM issue up, as from time to time I have come across
blind diabetics with no accessible glucose meters Or are paying for their CGM
metres.

In case you plan to self-fund it, this one is less expensive than the
Dexcom G7. Libre 2 works with a phone app (can't tell you how accessible
is it) and the sensor lasts 14 days not 10 for the Dexcom. I used Dexcom
for years and it uses Bluetooth to connect to the phone so one device
only, but the app has a feature to share live results with other persons
monitoring you.

Good morning, everyone. I can't believe it's already August. It's
nearly time to begin Christmas shopping, I reckon. Not today though;
you have my notes from the Cork Technology Club to read through first.
So sit back and enjoy the read.
There were 10 participants.
The meeting started with four eager participants joining early. They
discussed the weather around the country; some places have suffered
from extreme gusts, particularly Cork, this morning. This weather
discussion lasted a while, with topics including the accuracy of yellow
and orange warnings. The conversation concluded that Irish people are
never content with the weather.
Jackie informed the group that she was able to fix the problem she was
having with her apple watch, which she reported last week, when she
joined a Zoom meeting. To fix the issue, she opened settings, went to
general, and turned off auto-launch.
There will be no Dublin Tech Club meeting on Monday this week.
Jackie told the group that she persuaded someone else to purchase the
Hable One. This is a small Braille keyboard sold by Sight and Sound
technology ,that can be used to control your iPhone. It's a small
plastic device that looks like a child's toy, leading to discussions
from those in the group familiar with Braille.
The group then moved onto discussing glucose sensors. The one being
discussed can be connected to your phone. Dexcom was a brand mentioned.
This sensor can have three devices connected to it and is the size of a
coin, according to Pat. You stick it on your arm, and a small needle
tests your blood. The note-taker apologizes for any inaccuracies here,
as he briefly lost his notes and missed the beginning of this topic.
Joanne mentioned that there are dogs trained to assist diabetic
children. Jackie mentioned that the sister of one of her dogs was
trained as one of these.
Paul raised a problem with Microsoft Edge. He thought it could read
PDFs and image files. He tried it on a restaurant menu online but found
that it did not work for him, both on his phone and desktop. Martin
suggested pressing the spacebar and Jaws key to engage the Jaws OCR
feature. Jackie also suggested using Seeing AI as a method. Cearbhall
opined that Microsoft Edge cannot convert image files, though it can
display them. Most PDFs are available in text formats that screen
readers can read. He also suggested that the OCR feature is his best
option. Pat mentioned that his iPhone camera recently acted as an OCR
option. Jackie explained that this was because he had enabled the
"Describe Images" feature on his iPhone. This led to a discussion about
why settings are turned off to save memory. This feature can be added
to the rotor; you go to accessibility settings and rotor to add it.
Annemarie demonstrated the iPhone camera reading text on its own,
without using any other apps. Paul a
sked if screen recognition would work; Jackie said no. Image
descriptions have been a feature for a long time. You can also use the
camera to scan QR codes, as Jackie mentioned. This feature has been
around for a long time. Stuart used this to add a Wi-Fi network to his
phone in the past.
The group then engaged in a small discussion about Voice Dream Reader.
A discussion on how the group does their shopping was started by
Annemarie. Jackie mentioned that she uses the Tesco app as she finds it
easier than Dunnes Stores. She primarily shops online. Ger asked if
Jackie's phone identifies chocolate bunnies, to which she replied,
unfortunately, it doesn’t.
Martin brought up the write-up that Vision Sports did on the Blind
Tennis World Games in August. It is in their most recent monthly
letter. This is the piece:
"Ireland to be represented at the IBSA World Games
The International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) World Games are being
held in Birmingham from 18th – 27th August. The IBSA World Games are
the largest high-level international event for athletes with visual
impairments, with more than 1000 competitors from more than 70 nations
competing in ten sports. For the first time, tennis will be included in
the IBSA Games.
The 8-person team that will represent Ireland is; Lisa & Stuart (B1),
Barb & Vincent (B2), Marguerite & Ariadna (B3), Doris & Rya (B4).
The team will be supported by Team Manager, Wesley and a coaching team
of Simon and Ann-Marie from Tennis Ireland.
Vision Sports Ireland would like to say congratulations to those
selected and wish the team the best of luck in the upcoming games."
Jackie mentioned a new Vodafone scam going around, telling users that
they did not agree to the terms and conditions and their SIM card will
be deleted. They include a link to click. This led to a discussion
about the various scams currently prevalent. They have become very
insidious; Facebook has many of them currently. Ken asked if Stuart's
Alexa has still been acting up. He said no. Joanne mentioned she is
experiencing the same issues that Ken and Stuart were having in the
past. The group was not sure why this was happening. Ken is still
occasionally experiencing the issue. Ken tested it during the meeting.
The group discussed the "Find My" feature and how it can be used by
Siri to locate any other Apple device. Ken tried to swap his living
room device with his bedroom one but was unsuccessful. The group
suggested trying the "Now Playing" feature in the Alexa app to
determine what Alexa is playing. He went through them one by one to
figure it out. Jackie suggested he try an audiob
ook to be sure, instead of the radio. Ken gave this a go for a while.
Jackie brought up the new Echo Pop that Amazon is selling. They are
between 40 and 60 Euros, according to Jackie.
Joanne mentioned that there is a mini USB port at the back of the Echo
Show. Cearbhall brought up that there are multiple voices in Voice
Dream Reader and according to him, all the voices are currently free.
The group briefly discussed the occasional emails that are messing up
when they are sent to the list. A lot of people found it annoying that
this keeps happening.
Ger asked about how to reduce the mouse size on an old Mac laptop he
had. The group suggested getting a bigger cat.. Cearbhall suggested
turning the zoom down. Stuart said he would look into it. Cearbhall
found a video that should fix his problem. Go to Preferences,
Accessibility, and Pointer.
Ger asked about the best iPad to get. The group suggested getting an
iPad with 128 GB. Pat suggested the refurbished option in the Apple
Store as a cheaper alternative to buying new.
Ken asked if moving Alexa from his bedroom to his living room would
cause problems. Jackie said he will need to rename it if he moved it to
the living room to avoid confusion.
The meeting ended with people discussing food, for example, putting
eggs in air fryers. The note-taker presumes that the participants were
feeling quite hungry at this point.
The meeting ended with all the participants going off for some lunch.
