Cork technology notes 17th December 2022.
Good afternoon to everyone reading these notes this fine day. today was the
last cork technology club of 2022 and it was my absolute privilege to note
all the crazy antics that happened during it this morning. So sit back put on
the fire or heating and pour some hot chocolate and settle in for a hopefully
enjoyable read of the events that took place at the final cork technology
meeting of 2022
10 of santa’s Elves attended today, the rest are presumably busy getting
ready for Christmas
Four people started the meeting with one of them coming in with the profile
name of Santa Claus. The participants started of talking about the recent
freezing weather and rugby. They also started talking about the upcoming
World Cup final between France and Argentina. Dominique also told the group
that she has started making calls from Alexa. Jackie tried to trick her by
telling her that each call cost €500, she was not amused. The rest of the
pre meeting meandered on to a number of different topics while the
participants waited for more people to show up today. Some of these topics
were quite strange. Derry told us quite an interesting story.
Martha asked Jackie what model of air fryer she had, she did not know, The
group returned to talking about the weather with some people saying that
there was thick sheets of ice in places. Jackie said she would find out the
model of air fryer and get back to her with it
Dominique told us more about how she made calls with Alexa, she finds it
absolutely fantastic it makes her life so much easier. The group started
briefly talking about books.
Pat mentioned that the old apple products have recently received a new
security update. The group started discussing updates. Any iPhone below an
iPhone 8 cannot install iOS 16. To check if you need an update open general,
select software update you should discover if you need an update in there.
Jackie told the group she got her i pod engraved as saying that it is the
last I pod. Joanne asked if Jackie had tried door detection yet, she has not.
It took her a long time to find it. If you have the iPhone 14 pro you can
find it in the App Library. This is located in the last page on your Home
Screen. The iPhone 14 also has a start up sound and close down sound. Other
iPhones have the close down sound only.
Paul asked if anyone had started receiving messages saying that his message
had failed. The group said it could happen, we got a surprise new member
joining us today, the group went around and introduced themselves to her
giving her an idea of where they are from. Our new member introduced herself
and gave us an idea of who she is. The group had a bit of fun comparing how
the typical speech synthesisers pronounce some irish names such as Cian,
Ciaron and Cearbhall. The group asked the new member if she used an iPhone
or android, she uses an iPhone.
Cearbhall started talking about brail and speak. The brail and speak was the
very first brail device released for a computer. He gave us the history of
different devices. Cearbhall recently came across an article discussing it.
He recently posted stuff on it to the FB list this week. Cearbhall feels that
it is an important skill that all blind people should be using to improve
their sense of touch overall. Cearbhall mentioned that orbit are discussing
having speech on their brail devices in the future, very similar to the brail
and speak. Orbit uses a different technique to create its dots. You need to
be careful touching the dots on a brail device as you might break the springs
in the device. Pat asked if a test function could be implemented to
determine if the device is fully working, Cearbhall said they already had
one. Literary brail is different to computer brail literary brail has grade
1 and 2. Grade 2 brail shortens words while grade 1 brail spells words out
fully. Cearbhal
l said that his original brail and speak cost him $600. The conversation
continued§ for a while. They started talking about some device called the
focus 40 the note taker knows nothing about this device.
Paul asked about soundscape being discontinued by next January. Microsoft
soundscape will know longer be available from the 3rd of January to download,
if you already have the app you will be able to continue using it until June
2023. Microsoft are releasing the code for some other group to possibly pick
up the software. The group discussed what sound scape was to members who did
not know what it is. The group discussed possible solutions to possiblely
stop this from happening, ranging from e-mailing them, letters or speaking to
them directly.
another navigation app that can be used is called lazirilo. There is also a
new app being developed in Belgium that will allow people to detect when a
traffic light changes from green to red. This excited the group as many of
them have had bad encounters with traffic lights not working or being to
quiet so they were not able to hear them. A number of stories were told here.
Apparently some traffic lights use something called a parabolic speaker. Some
traffic lights have different sounds to differentiate them from each other
when they are in close proximity to each other.
One of the members mentioned that they used a metal writing frame plus seeing
AI to write their Christmas cards this year. they were successful and posted
them out this morning, the group discussed Christmas cards for a while and
how their writing looks these days. The group reflected on how fantastic it
is that seeing AI is available for this use. A number do their Christmas
cards by printing out copies of their signature on a label and sticking them
in the cards. Another mentioned moon pig as a method of doing Christmas
cards. One member does their cards virtually online, this is done by sending
them either through e-mails, or what’s app.
The group started discussing accessible videos for a while and what needs to
be included in them to make them accessible to blind and visually impaired
people. It lasted for a few minutes, accessible formats for different things
such as letters was also discussed.
Navi LENS was talked about at multiple points throughout the meeting.
The meeting ended at this point with everyone wishing each other a merry
Christmas and a very happy new year. I also wish everyone who is reading
these notes the same. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my notes throughout the
year and have found them to be enjoyable and informative. Looking forward to
next year.
Regards
The notetaker
