The members celebrated Ken's birthday with yet another awful rendering of the
usual birthday chorus. No apologies were offered but singing tuition might be
worth considering.
On a sad note, the meeting gave some thought to the terrible tragedy in
Creeslough as the last of the 10 funerals takes place.
Paul is to be congratulated for his effective lobbying of the technical team
developing the TV Guide app on IOS. The problem related to unnamed links and
buttons that were critical to the execution of the app and are now fixed.
The meeting agreed that it is useful to warn developers that Apple requires
full compliance with the rules of accessibility and if they fail to resolve the
inaccessibility of their app, they run the risk of being unable to distribute
it on IOS.
A question arose about what exactly "In app purchases" refers to. It was agreed
that it refers to the buying of goods and services from inside an application
on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet. In-app purchases allow
developers to provide their applications for free.
Paul had a bad day during the week when all his messages were unmanageable with
Voiceover. Fortunately his memory is in the best of order and he recalled the
warning from members last week to be careful of "Screen recognition" when he is
not actually using that feature. He found out that this was the very reason for
his problem and all was restored to normal functioning when he switched off
"Screen Recognition". He decided to keep this on the rotor for ready access in
any future troublesome situations.
Joanne, has had no luck getting her Amazon Echo to give out recipes that used
to be available. all she gets is the message "That feature is not supported".
She will try again and report back.
Chris reported a problem getting Siri to send out messages. "Working on that"
was the frequent response with no eventual delivery. It was suggested that it
might be worth checking to see if the target phone is accurately focussed.
Another possibility was that the Internet might have been too slow to let Siri
function properly.
In the follow-up chat, a wish was expressed that IOS return a warning that an
outgoing message had failed.
Dominique and Ken showed how a double tap on the power circle in the Apple
watch was in danger of calling emergency services. Chris suggested that there
was no harm in accidentally calling emergency services as long as an apology
was made along with an explanation of the cause. Instantly abandoning the
accidental call would leave Emergency Services wondering if the event was a
real emergency and causing them to waste time on it.
Dominique was unable to activate the covid app from within a notification
relating to it. The group suggested that she might not have activated her pin
since she has two-step authentication active.
Martin wondered how a visually impaired colleague who is a stamp collector
might continue to maintain his collection with the new digital stamps.
Chris, the post Office rep at the meeting, advised anyone experiencing delivery
problems or not getting notifications of delivery using digital stamps to
contact the DSU or customer services.
Jackie found that her new Google Mail account could receive emails in Outlook
on the laptop but not send them. When she called Microsoft support through "Be
My Eyes," she found that two factor authentication needed to be activated to
make sending possible. Even with the help of Microsoft support, it took several
attempts to establish the connection.
Ken found that his local Credit Union was charging â¬1 for every lodgement
into his savings account. This was the first time he had encountered this
charge since its official introduction in 2021. Here is a press account of this

Ken reported that he had failed to set up automatic "Out of Office" messaging
in the Mail app of IOS. He tried the Google link below but found that he could
not complete the steps specified. It is included here for others to have a go:

Stuart reported that it is easy to set up an automatic response in the Outlook
app on the iPhone instead of using the Mail app.
Martin announced that Sighted Cinema is running its next performance "In the
Dark" and all are welcome.
Finally, there was a discussion of audio books and some really good titles that
members have enjoyed. Such services as Goodreads, Bookshare and Borrowbox were
mentioned as useful apps on IOS.
