Cork technology notes 25th February 2023
Good morning. It is me the note taker back today to bring you the minutes of
the most recent cork technology meeting. So sit back and enjoy the read this
evening.
10 participants
A number of participants were here early today and had a number of
interesting discussions. Including Santa letters and visits to the north
pole. It was quite a strange conversation. Jackie informed the group that you
are not aloud to sit on Santa’s lap anymore. A number of people also
discussed how they have banged their heads unintentionally on objects before.
Some examples included metal shutters and post boxes. This led into a
discussion surrounding the benefits of having a post box and where you can
get them. The post boxes from an post have two.slots for keys you and the
postman. They are estimated to be around 70 or 80 euro. You can also arrange
for an e-mail to be sent to you when you get mail in your box. A lot of newer
doors also do not have letter boxes anymore. Many people talked about the
rubbish they used to get through their letterboxes in the past. The
conversation briefly switched to the problems with heat being let out by
letterboxes and how to seal them up.
Pat mentioned his iPod touch and that his e-mails on it are going wrong. For
example he sends an email but it only moves to drafts after sending it. The
problem is not a wi fi issue. It is completely up to date as regards updates.
The participants were not sure what the issue may be. Ken thought it still
may be the wi fi or maybe it should be reset. Jackie suggested throwing it
against the wall, pat said he would take that one under serious advisement.
Jackie mentioned that she is having problems with the IOS 16 feature of
e-mails having a ten second delay before they are sent, she is concerned that
they do not appear in her sent email folder. This concerns her as she is
unsure that the email has been received by the person she sent it to.
We had a new member join us today. The participants spent some time getting
to know him. Their was some discussion of using the pronunciation feature of
voice over. To find this feature open the accessibility settings and voice
over to locate it. This feature allows you to adjust how voice over on your
apple device pronounces specific words. It can be beneficial to use in the
case voice over cannot pronounce someone’s name correctly. One of the
participants had a poor signal in the meeting so this sparked a discussion on
the topic The group gave their introductions to the new member as well, some
of them were quite interesting.
Martin mentioned an issue with zoom were it said that it was updating when he
signed in today. Jackie said that this was because he was coming in on the
computer. This is a common issue on the computer so just let it update if you
have this same issue. This does not happen on the iPhone or iPad because the
updates come through the app store a longside with other apps.
Jackie said she had an issue with Waterford whispers. The issue was that she
couldn't access the story. until she utilised the forms control on the rotor
and then double tapped on the option voice over called times. This was the
exit button but it wasn't labeled correctly. Ken confirmed that he
encountered a similar issue on another website. Pat also brought up that he
could only access an e-mail using form controls, Pat asked what form
controls are on the rotor. Cearbhall did not know what it is, he guessed it
was for selecting edit boxes or all editable objects on a page. Cearbhall
gave the analogy of eggs in a tray to explain it to the group.
Ken asked the new member if he had any questions he wanted to ask to the
group. He said that he is an android user and does not use talk back on his
device. He finds talk back tedious to turn on and off when he gets fed up
with it. Jackie asked if google assistant could turn on talk back quicker, he
said no it only brings you to settings. He tried to put in a shortcut to try
making it quicker but it did not work. Screen readers and phones were
discussed for a while. Comparisons between the different phones were made.
The new member brought up select to speak on the google phones as an option,
he described it as a feature that requires you to scroll down with a finger
and it reads whats highlighted under your finger. The new member also brought
up an alternative screen reader called commentary which is available to
download on android which is apparently very good. Discussions of the price’s
of various phones were brought up, from the high prices of iPhones to the
significantly che
aper ones for android and google phones.
Cearbhall asked how zoom works on the new members android phone. He said he
had to choose what setting he wanted to join audio with. A number of members
had this happen to them for some reason recently. No one new why this has
started to happen. Joanne suggested to check your zoom settings to see if
they were changed because of a recent update. Ken went and tried this during
the meeting. To find the setting, on an i pad or iPhone select the more tab,
the meeting settings then select auto connect select wifi to avoid this issue
happening to you.
Paul mentioned zoom shows up in his recent phone calls, he was wondering if
he is being charged for these calls. Pat said that he isn’t.
Cearbhall said he is having problems editing his e-mail address when he signs
in to zoom. He can’t determine where the cursor is in the box when he edits
it. He gets no keyboard feedback when he types. Jackie said she has been
having similar issues for quite a while when adding in her name she gets no
keyboard feedback she also said she has a similar issue on the audible
website. The group discussed this for a while. They were quite concerned of
it. A number of participants said they encountered this predicament in a
number of different places throughout the internet. Part of the issue is that
It allows you to put in characters without letting you know what you have
typed.
Cearbhall asked what is the apple keychain. Jackie explained this to
cearbhall. She said you need to turn it on in I cloud settings. It is apples
built in password manager. To add passwords manually to key chain select
password settings, you can have multiple passwords for the same website, it
gives you the date of the most recent password for a website and it lets you
know if a password is compromised of not secure.
Paul asked how to select information in an e-mail and copy and paste it to
another place. The group said to use the rotor switch to text selection,
swipe up or down to find what form you want to select i.e lines, characters,
words, pages or all. Swipe right until you have selected all you want. Then
switch the rotor to edit swipe down to copy then open whats app, messages etc
then use edit on the rotor again then select paste to place the text you
selected.
The new member explained how to select text on the android. He explained to
us but the note taker missed it unfortunately. Jackie said the android had a
rotor as well..
The group started discussing sim cards and some offers that are currently on.
Martin asked whow expensive a habel one is. Jackie told him. She also
explained in detail to the group what it is. She compared it to a sandwich.
She has not been tempted to eat it yet. It looks like a toy according to
Jackie. Martin asked about a new product called doodle. Martin explained it
was a new device for teaching children brail for maths.
Martin said eir are giving a new sim card for ten euro for twelve months. All
calls and texts. Its a rolling contract. The group disscussed it for a while
and different companies and their prices.
Martin told the group that ancient sour doe rolls are now available in Aldi.
Ken brought attention to an app that is accessible for identifying birds. The
app is called merlin. It is very accessible. The participants who tried the
merlin app were extremely impressed. It picks up the audio sound of the bird
and identify’s it that way. It can identify them even if their is a number of
them around. It will just list all It hears, it also works with talk back.
The group devolved into a bird watching club at this point for a while. Their
was debate if pigeons and owls are very different, a couple of participants
thought they were hearing owls instead of pigeons in their areas.
Martin said he had a new app. Rebokah is an app for partially sighted people,
it is a magnifier.
The new member brought up that a plant identifying app they tried awas
completely useless as it gave in accurate information. The group then evolved
into a horticultural club. Some plants smell like likurish and curry. Pat
tried to get the note taker to spell some latin name for a plant. The note
taker wisely did not try attempting this.
Cearbhall said he recently used the rte player on the iPhone, he was
extremely impressed with his experience, the commentary on the match he
watched was fantastic. The group attempted to identify who was the
commentator on the match he watched.
Jackie updated the group on the Facebook issue she spoke about last week
regarding not being able to like things. it has been fixed apparently without
any update coming through for Facebook on the app store. The group then
discussed the recent news that Facebook wishes to charge users for a premium
subscription for some new features. they wish to charge 11 euro apparently.
Jackie does not like the adds on Facebook, she finds them to be creepy. This
topic was discussed for a while.
Martha said she updated to the most recent iOS update, the group discussed
that they had seen know issues with it, apart from pat’s e-mail issue
mentioned earlier in these notes. The group discussed phones for a while
here. One of the point’s talked through was the preference of having or not
having a home button.
Martha brought back up the RTE player and that she finds it difficult to use
on the iPad, it closes down without any warning and brings her back to the
home screen. A number of members said they had this happen to them before in
different apps. The group suggested looking for an update or deleting and
redownloading the app once more to possibly fix this. The group discussed
iPads and what are the benefits they have over iPhones, the group concluded
it is because it is a bigger surface and the visual benefits.
The meeting concluded at this point. The note taker hopes you enjoyed the
notes this week.
All the best.
Regards
The note taker.20
