Subject: [fb-exchange] Cork technology notes 25th March 2023
Good morning its me this week providing you with the notes from this
morning’s cork technology club meeting So sit back and enjoy the read this
afternoon.
The meeting began with a number of eager participants talking about the
weather and that the clocks are going forward tomorrow. We also discussed air
pods and how they sound when they connect to a computer. Some people found
the sound quality to not be great on a computer. A lot of banter and messing
went on as well during the pre meeting period. Paul asked if he should do a
zoom update when it appears, the group told him he should update zoom when it
does.
Martin told the group that the way cearbhall advised him to sort his
documents worked perfectly for him. He previously wanted to learn how to sort
them by most recent. The group practiced singing for a while.
Jackie informed the group she purchased two new home pod minis to add to her
family. She told the group they are not as good as the Alexa. She can make
calls to anyone in her contacts, she can also create notes and reminders
that will appear on her other apple devices. The group talked about home
pods for a while. She finds the sound quality to be quite good. She said that
it was extremely easy to sign up. She only had to enter a four digit number
her home pod gave her and it connected to her apple ID. She finds that the
dictation quality of the HomePod is fairly decent. She demonstrated it for
the group by sending a text to a member of the group during the meeting.She
also played some music through it as well. It does not support I books. She
gave the home pod 5 out of 10 overall. The group discussed smart speakers for
a while.
Paul said he got a new credit card last week, he was disappointed that he
could not feel the numbers on it. Paul said that a way to find it without
the numbers is to find the part of it that felt like it had a bite taken out
of it. The group discussed different cards for a while. Revolute does not
have numbers that you can feel on it either according to those in the group
who use it. People found it hard to differentiate between the different cards
they have to use. Martin told the group he puts his cards in a container with
different sections in it with brail on it to know what cards are in each
section. He put the brail on it by himself utilising a brail frame.
Martin told the group he attended a meeting demonstrating the new envision
glasses. Apparently they can be used to read menus by asking them to read
the text, read the fish options for example. He found them to be quite
interesting. The prices of these products are quite high. You can get a 30
day trial apparently if you can get them. Dominique asked what is the
difference between the 3 versions he saw on the meeting. They are more
detailed the more expensive they are. Martin said that the meeting was
recorded and is on you tube for anyone interested
Jackie told the group she can transfer calls from her phone to her home pod
seamlessly as well. The group discussed the differences between android and
iPhone and how easy they are to set up for blind people.
Paul asked how to close apps on his new phone if you can see. The group told
him its the exact same for sighted people as visually impaired people you
close them in the app switcher. The group discussed back tap, and how to get
Siri to turn off and restart the iPhone. Back tap allows you to activate a
number of shortcuts for example double tap the back of your phone to invert
colours. This can be found in the accessibility settings of an i phone. Some
people have accidentally called emergency services when they tried to restart
there iPhones in the past.
Cearbhall brought up brail devices, their are two new devices coming out in
the future. They are the optima and orbit-speak. He saw them at a zoom
meeting he attended yesterday. The optima is a laptop that will be coming out
next year that will cost around €3000. It will have a full qwerty keyboard, a
brail display with 40 characters, it accommodates screen readers, it runs
windows 11 and is quite light weight. The orbit speak is a brail keyboard
with in built speech,. it is the size of. a paper back book. They use google
voices. The orbit speak will cost €500. The orbit speak is coming out in
June.
The group discussed the technicals aid grant for a while as well. This has to
be approved by the HSE and on the recommendation of social workers. It is
post code dependent for those who may wish to apply for it. The group
discussed different grants and help that you can get in employment such as
the workplace equipment adaptation grant
Ken asked if anyone had started using the digital stamp from AN post. He is
curious how it works. Their is an app apparently. You apparently write a code
on by hand as part of it. No one was sure how it works
Stuart brought up he got to try out the amazon fire stick this week. This is
a device you plug into the back of Your television like plugging a USB key
into a laptop and you require a HDMI port in your television to use it.
Stuart feels that cited assistance is needed to make sure that you can set up
correctly.Once you haven’t set up, you can use voice view by holding down the
menu and back button for two seconds. Once you have that done, the tutorial
is quite clear and easy to follow this product allows you to use streaming
services with Amazons screen reader VoiceView. Some of the streaming
services that are available for this include Amazon Prime, Netflix and
Disney+. Stuart found it to be quite a good device and would recommend it for
anyone who wishes to use streaming services on the television
Ken brought up he got to download the Duns store and super-value apps this
week. He found the duns store app was easier to set up then super-value.
Jackie said she finds duns to be a very clunky app. Ken had some difficulty
with super value as some of the fields were hard to access and there was a
lot of steps involved. He found super-value to be quite accessible once he
set it up.. Overall he was quite satisfied with them.
Jackie brought the ocu app up. This is an app that can be used for detecting
when a traffic light changes colour. It requires that you have your phone out
to use it. The group was not comfortable with the thought of holding your
phone out to use it. This app is currently not available in Ireland. The
group talked about how it works for a while. It uses the back camera to
detect traffic lights. The group discussed traffic lights in different parts
of the country. And crossings.
The group finished of the meeting talking about guide dogs and easter eggs.
