Cork technology notes 28th January 2023
This morning saw another cork technology meeting take place, so sit back and
enjoy the read.
The meeting commenced with a number of people talking about the weather,
walking and guide dogs in the pre meeting discussion. Some of the
participants had a bit of bad signal initially. The group then began
discussing the high levels of rain experienced by new Zealand recently.
Dominique mentioned that bbc 4 was playing the women’s tennis this morning,
she had difficulty because it told her because of rights issues she could not
listen to it on that station, Different tv stations were talked about as
well and what rights they have to broadcast shows.
Paul mentioned his phone has recently suffered a hardware issue, he told the
group what he did to get it fixed. Thankfully he was able to get it sorted.
Cearbhall told the group that he is going to try blind tennis soon, stuart
hopes he enjoys it and is looking forward to playing him in a match in the
future. The meeting then moved on to the topic of the gaa and the six nations.
Cearbhall brought up that he received a message from someone regarding a
presentation from a person’ in Belgium who is developing an app that detects
traffic lights, Cearbhall forwarded it to the list recently if anyone wants
to view it. The person he received it from was from the EBU. Part of it was
played during the cork meeting this morning. It was quite interesting. The
group then discussed it for a significant period. The app is called OKO and
exclusively runs on an iPhone. It uses the camera to find traffic lights. It
uses haptic and audio feedback alongside onscreen information to tell the
user if the traffic light has changed colour. The app does not contact the
traffic light it uses AI to determine if it has changed. It has been active
on the app store for 9 months in the Benelux to this point. A recent feature
they have launched is the ability to detect trams and buses with audio
signals. It does not require wi fi or reception to use. It works from iPhone
7 and up. It doe
s not work on android. The group wondered if the app would be useable with a
body camera or sunglasses with bluetooth. The group then discussed courtesy
crossings and how difficult they are for blind people to navigate. The Move
it app was briefly discussed. Alongside a number of other apps. The creater
of the app does not want blind people to have to pay for it. The group had a
conversation around traffic lights and how they operate in different
countries.
Jackie mentioned an app called book funnel today, she discovered this app
when she received a link to an authors website where it was mentioned that
it could be used on it. She found the app to be a fantastic experience.She
opened the app put in the code she received after purchasing the book she
wanted and her book then appeared there. She found it hard to find other
authors on it though. It is a way of buying the book directly from the author
instead of another service, it is a free app. This was discussed for a while
as well as the percentage authors get for selling on audible.
One of the participants mentioned that they were able to get their passport
sorted recently with no issues. Passports were discussed for a while after
this. Travel passes were also talked about briefly.
Ken brought up an issue, the follow up information e-mail sent out by
Cearbhall was quite helpful. He also asked when he hits reply and send to
e-mails it does not ever show up in his sent folder or any other folder. The
group had a number of different suggestions ranging from if it has been
scheduled or if the 10 second delay was enabled, none of these were the
problem.
Sound scape was discussed the group talked about whether microsoft would
consider taking back up the app again in the future. A number of participants
received replies from them, some had there e-mails bounced back. A number of
people mentioned that they were losing audio on the meeting this morning.
iOS 16.3 was recently released for those interested in updating. This was
discussed. Alongside Siri, headphones and bugs.
