Subject: [fb-exchange] Cork technology notes 9th March 2024

Cork technology club notes 9th march 2024.

Good morning everyone, we’re one more day  closer to easter and one more day closer to mother’s day. While you all are pondering the implications of that information. Why don’t you sit back and enjoy the highjinks  that took place this week down in cork.

10 participants

5  early birds joined the meeting early for some early chatter. Dominique said she got the vision Ireland skill up and running after they changed the name of it. The rugby was also  briefly mentioned.  It is on the radio 4.45pm this evening. Some people asked How a rugby match is run.  Adrian got back to us about an issue he was having last week regarding booking a ticket for a concert, he was able to get it sorted.

Jackie brought up an issue to cearbhall that she has had during the week. She said that she received  brail from someone  in mail but it came out in a different language,.  but if she views it in   a different mail account it is fine.  She thought it might be a html or plain text issue. She could read it in outlook with jaws but not with voice over in the mail app on the iPhone. Dominique said there is an auto detect language setting on the iPhone that could be causing the issue, she suggested turning it off. to turn it off do the following. Open settings, find accessibility, select voice over, select speech and scroll down to detect language and turn it on or off as you feel necessary.

Cearbhall said that he thinks that it is because of copying and pasting from an external source  that could be causing it.

The group briefly discussed the app quick assist an app that allows organisations such as vision Ireland labs to control your phone to help with  issues..  The vision Ireland skill was discussed for a period and how people have been finding it to register  for.

Adrian and cearbhall briefly discussed how html can mess up text articles when it is placed on a website. Cearbhall said that if articles are printed to a journal it can automaticvally hyphenate words.

Martin asked why voice over suddenly changes language , This was the auto detect language issue again.

Chris said he got a new robot lawnmower this week. Ger swore quite vociferously  at this point when he found out the brand Chris got.  The brand is Husqvarna

He is quite happy with it. Ger and joanne said that the blades need replacing often on that brand of lawnmower.  Adrian asked if he had connected to Alexa, he had not done so yet but he will try it later. The group discussed various lawnmowers for a while.

Martin brought up that he heard about a guide dog robot. He said that  he thinks it only works inside at the moment. The note taker feels that it would definitely be easier to clean up after then a regular guide dog but would still not feel the same.

The group discussed an electronic template that someone said that is being developed in the north for voting. It was discussed in the Dublin technology club last Monday.

Martin asked if the upgrading from 3g to 4 and 5 g will effect how our phones are working. The group said no. it was discussed for a while. Jackie brought up esim. These are electronic sim cards. Only vota phone offer these currently in Ireland. They are primarily  in America. To learn more go here-https://www.techradar.com/how-to/what-is-an-esim-and-why-would-you-need-one

They were discussed for a while with people asking questions about it. Adrian said that it   could work with a smart  watch. The note taker will look into this  for his own watch. Jackie asked if you could have multiple numbers on an esim . Adrian was not sure of this.

Cearbhall asked where the sim card is on the iPhone. It is on the right side of the device. You can use a paperclip or a specific tool to remove it.

Martin asked about the cobalt air -fryer  that  was discussed by the vision Ireland podcast during the week. Martin was quite impressed with it. Jackie has the ccosori  one. To learn more about the cobolt air fryer  go here-

https://cobolt.co.uk/products/talking-air-fryer

air fryers were discussed for a while after this. Jackie said she can control hers with the app on her phone.

Adrian brought up that the mail app on windows will be retired, he said that you can by a free outlook  version in the microsoft store.

Outlook was discussed for a while here.

There was a debate on how to maximise a window some said it is windows key plus up arrow and  others said itt is alt space and x.

Dominique asked if people had read the survey that she sent out yesterday. It was a survey about the most popular screen reader currently being used. In America jaws is run on a subscription model according to a few  people during the meeting. Heres some information about it.

Adrian asked a question about jaws. He asked if jaws can magnify one screen. Can it be put into span mode. . The group did not know the answer to this. Jackie said that there is a jaws group on Facebook, or contact freedom scientific directly to perhaps find the answer. Cearbhall asked if NVDA could  solve the issue. Adrian was unaware that NVDA had magnification built into  it.

A handy voice over feature that was discussed was how to relabel something. To relabel un labeled elements on your iPhone. Double tap and hold with two fingers. A text box will appear and you can call it whatever you want. The note taker uses this feature to put be my AI descriptions on photos.

According to Dominique if you have itv you can get live audio description of the Ireland v English match today.

The new echo pop was discussed with each person giving their perspective.

Accessible glasses where discussed briefly with the concern of how privacy will be impacted by them when they become more common.

Cearbhall brought up the vulnerable users list  and the solar panel scheme that was discussed a few months ago. He tried to apply for them but had no luck this week.

The group briefly discussed whether there is a benefit to having coloured canes. The group was a bit split with most people saying no a white cane was best.

The meeting ended at this point. I hope you all have a great week.

Regards

The note taker.
