Welcome back one and all for an exciting X-rated Cork Tech Club. This is
the first Tech Club of 2023 so
Lady W will bring you through the meeting in her own unique style. We had
11 persons in attendance.
We firstly, wanted to extend our condolences on behalf of the Cork Tech Club
to Ken on the death of his Dad just before Christmas.
We started this morning with the secondary Unvisionary choir singing Happy
Birthday to Stuart. Our youngest member is in the last year of his twenties.
Jackie kicked us off with her update on her Bank of Ireland complaint. The
person who is investigating it offered to remove the Strong customer
Authentication However, this was back tracked on when it was asked for in
writing that assurances would be given that there still would be
protection on the account if fraud should happen. Jackie is still waiting for
this letter and as yet its not happening so only time will tell what the next
part of Jackie verses Bank of Ireland will be. Paul then told us about how
his credit card disappeared from his accounts on the app. When he rang the
bank he was stunned to hear other people had complained and it was an issue
with the bankHowever, later in the day the credit card returned.
Paul also spoke about updating his iPhone. Paul has the SE3. There seems to
be issues with this phone freezing and certain processes are needed to bring
the phone back to life. Dominique said she has conected her phone to the
computer and now she does a soft reset. This is done by quickly holding the
volume up button and then the volume down button and then hold the power
button down for longer than usual. This does a soft reset. We spoke of the
good old days when it was easier to do the soft reset, it used to be done by
pressing and holding the home button and power button.
The group wondered was there issues with the SE3 phones.
Jackie was all delighted on downloading NVDA without supervision. Cearbhall
sent the download link and Jackie worked away. Jackie then returned to
Cearbhall looking for add ons which was sourced once Jackie found out the
proper name of the add on she was looking for.
Time for a cuppa and snowball.
Cearbhall's wife uses a different modem for her work. This modem has some
sort of a fire wall that interferes with the dwellings own WIFI. Cearbhall
followed wires and along with a vodafone bright spark all was connected. The
bright spark could see from her end that the wifi was online. Now to shorten
the story a tad, Alexa wwas not online so he worked with his son and got the
wifi password and Alexa is back on line. As yet we are unsure of what effects
Cearbhall's technical tampering will have when his wife returns to work. So
if loud screams are heard in Bray we can be assured all has not gone well and
Cearbhall is looking for a new dwelling with his modem, computer and Alexa.
This brings us on nicely to Jackie's new reclining sofa and this will be
utilised by Chris and Cearbhall as both men come down one armed with a
spanner to look at Jackie's heating system. This air to water system is going
great part from since Jackie has lowered the temperature the indoor
temperature has increased. This is according to Alexa. Jackie was advised
there could be a fault with the thermostat. So Jackie will see about this on
Monday.
Its not a cork Tech club if audible and soundscape are not discussed.
Firstly, to audible Jackie told us all about reading 11 books since January
first. It was suggested that when Chris and Cearbhall and the spanner come
down there will be no time for reading. Jackie also informed us that its in
the terms and conditions of audible that if an author removes a book from
audible and its removed from their site then it will also be removed from
your library. Jackie was told this by audible. Jackie had this issue during
the week however, one book got returned. Then audible memberships was
discussed both Stuart and Jackie goes for the yearly options of 12 and 24
credits, this works better for these two rather than the one credit a month.
Stuart also told us how apple books are using AI to narrate their audio
books. Ken pulled up a few samples, Ken managed to get the options for both
male and female in a few different books. The jury is out as it sounded
fairly good but may not work in bo
oks with multiple characters.
Now soundscape. Cearbhall uses this and because its soon to be removed from
the app store Cearbhall does not find it as accurate as it once was. Jackie
had heard from an external source that microsof didn't realise how useful
blind people found the app. Soundscape will be exiting our lives soon. We all
hope someone takes it over as its an app that is very beneficial for
orientating one self in different locations with the directional navigation
when using headphones.
Blind Square rules.
Jackie told us about a new game she downloaded called Ploppy Pairs. It's a
children's game about matching cards. I attempted to add the link but all
went weird.
We started wrapping up and a we chat was had about getting lost or falling.
It was agreed how the confidence decreases when something like that happens
and regardless when walking with cane or dog it takes a while for that
confidence to return.
The meeting ended with scrubbing.
