The group welcomed a new member Gerard from Laois who is an Android user.
Luckily he found some fellow Android users in the session.
He revealed that he is a keen player of Blind Golf declaring that he
achieved more swings than contact. Never mind, there's always hope!
Vera uses Virgin Media which provides her with a link from her email
bill into the web site. She was curious to know about Java script as
this was named on the site. Bert explained that this is a programming
language that is used to make the web site take names, check passwords
and carry out other minor tasks to help users complete their
activities. Java Script used to be a nightmare for screen readers but
is now much more compatible with modern versions of JAWS and NVDA,
Voiceover and Talkback
Martin brought an update on the use of Braille Doodle, a teaching tool
to help children to learn Braille in a fun way. Consisting of a flat
board with multiple holes over the whole surface. There is a pin
inside each hole that is help by magnet or spring and jumps up to form
a single braille dot when pressed by the finger. The dot is erased by
simply pressing on the dot so that it clicks back into place. the
beauty of this design is that the child can "doodle" different shapes
or a parent can draw the shape of a letter of the alphabet or simple
diagrams of the position of rooms. The possibilities are endless. Read all

Joe is a regular user of Twitter. Lately, he has discovered that there
is no "like" button to indicate a preference for a particular
message. There were no solutions handy but Bert suggested that Joe
might tap and hold the Bookmark button and see if it expands to give
him the "Like" option as part of a range of choices. Joe will check
this out and report to the next meeting.
A previous meeting learned that Microsoft's Seeing AI is to
incorporate an indoor tracking feature drawn from the technology of
Soundscape. However, we are still waiting to try it out. Meanwhile,
the app, Clew does provide such tracking very successfully.
vera reported that she had been working on the solution to the 405
error, described last week, preventing her from accessing her Virgin
Media account on the iPhone while she could do so on the iPad. She
discovered that the version of iTunes on her iPhone was causing the
problem. However, she was unable to update it
she will take the problem to Mactivate in Dublin who will, she is
sure, help her to resolve the difficulty.
Apparently, IOS and windows have entirely different versions of
iTunes. The iTunes on Windows is not accessible but the IOS version is.
Gerard cannot turn off his Android phone. He can turn it on and use it
for all he needs but turning it off is a problem and so he has to
leave it switched on all the time.
This got a conversation going about the different slide gestures used
on the android to call Talkback and open context menus. For example,
sliding two fingers up brings on talkback, swipe up and right opens
the context menu An inverted V-shape opens speech rate.
It was suggested that Gerard consider the Blind shell instead of his
existing Android phone. However, Martin pointed out that the blind
shell is a "Feature Phone" not a Smart phone. It uses buttons but does load
certain apps also.
Bob remarked that there is a new model of the blind shell with a touch
screen.
Another limitation is the on board memory that is so small that
opening Zoom causes the Blind shell to crash.
Martin reminded members that Sight & Sound are still running a
competition to win the Hable One braille keyboard for managing the phone.
Michael is trying to use windows 11 and asked if JAWS for Home would
work or did it require Jaws Professional. The professional version of
JAWS is many times more expensive than the home version.
Bob is struggling to stop Outlook for Windows from showing his emails
in groups. Cearbhall and Bert explained that he would find the
"Display in Groups" setting under the view menu on the main menu bar.
Gerard asked for advice on what tablet to use. Bob outlined the range
of tablets from small units with very limited memory capacity up to
full size tablets with larger screens whose prices rise according to size and
memory.
The group felt that the iPad was the best choice, since it gives full
IOS functionality and is well supported.
Bob asked for ideas to provide personal high volume audio for a person
with a hearing impairment so that other family members could listen to
TV at normal volumes together. A Bluetooth Transmitter Adapter In
Transmitter mode, was recommended for access to a non-Bluetooth TV,
with headphones. On the other hand, vera uses a Widex system loop
which feeds the audio into her hearing aid. She is able to listen to
the TV independently while her family listens to the audio directly from the
TV at the same time.
Tom is with Virgin Media and is disappointed that he has too many WIFI
black spots in his house. Michael is using the TP Link mesh system
with great success. He has two components that feed off the main WiFi
router and reach to an outside building. Cearbhall has four Virgin
Media extenders that are failing to penetrate all solid walls.
