Declan thanked everyone for their support as he commences his leave of
absence from Fighting Blindness. He introduced Catherine Synnott who is
taking his place as contact person with Fighting Blindness.
The meeting began with an account of the technology being used by each
participant. There were iPhones, iPads, PCs JAWS NVDA and Voiceover with a
smattering of Androids.
John is turning from Android to break into the world of the iPhone and
received a wealth of advice on suitable options given that he needs visual
access more than audio for the moment. The latest larger phones post iPhone
11 and the PRO range of phones seem to be the most helpful to his situation.
He was told that iConnect in Henry Street was the main Apple outlet in
Dublin although other phone centres might be able to give him hands on
experience of the different models.
He was advised to buy the phone outright so that he could avail of the Aids
and Equipment grant which would not be possible in a phone bought by
instalments. The NCBI have the application forms but no longer fill them in
for people. Also, Bert reported that, lately, the department required him
to get a signed declaration from his doctor to certify that he was bona Fide
blind.
Bert also pointed out that Apple would send out the phone in a matter of
days if contacted directly.
From the iPhone 11 onwards, phones have no home button and use face
recognition to gain access.
The SE3 is the equivalent of the iPhone 13 in terms of internal hardware.
The case is cheaper and so the SE3 can be sold for a lower price than the
13.
Also, the later models have a superior camera in them.
A question of the quality of SIRI for dictating was raised. All agreed that
the Dictate tool in the fly-out keyboard in the iPhone is much better than
SIRI as, also, is Google Assist. Google Assist is especially useful for
discovering phone numbers.
People who use JAWS , Focus 40 and other equipment sold by Sight & Sound
Technology were warned that this is the last week of the Summer sale.
Bob had a call from abroad showing an initial 94 at the beginning of the
number. Everyone warned him that this was a typical scam number and should
not be answered under any circumstances.
Mary had a missed call showing the 94 calls at 3:50 am and was grateful
that her phone announced the number before she mistook the call for an
emergency number. It was suggested that perhaps these scam calls contribute
some finance to the calling country if answered from Ireland.
Declan is calling for participants in a programming opportunity which
require registration using a Microsoft Form. He said that the forms do not
work well with either JAWS or NVDA and are incorrectly structured with too
many level 2 headings. Someone suggested that the user put their screen
reader into browse mode and press the letter "e" to jump to the first edit
box. The form seems easy enough to use once the start position has been
found.
Bert explained that Voicedream Reader has three sections including the
reader, scanner and writer. He does not recommend the writer but the reader
and scanner are really excellent and easy to use. It is proving difficult to
find a good podcast that describes the full usage of the Voicedream programs
but Bert is still on the job and will report later. The app is developed by
Winston Chen.
The Orbit came up for a brief discussion and Cearbhall mentioned that Orbit
Research has just Introduced the Orbit Slate Family of Multi-line Braille
